Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC: The Road Warriors dropped a close game against the Wheeling Nailers in shootouts by a score of 3-2.
Greenville started off the game with high hopes and great energy. Ryan Flanigan scored 4:05 into the first period. Brendan Connolly worked the puck behind the net for Jordie Johnston who gave Flanigan a pass in the slot for a one-timer goal. The Road Warriors piled on shots in the first outshooting the Nailers 14-6.
The Road Warriors began the second with good intensity but T.J. Reynolds took a double minor penalty to put the Road Warriors down a man. Greenville killed that penalty but just moments later, Derek Matheson was penalized for cross-checking. Wheeling tied the game at one with a power play goal from Keven Veilleux who scored off the boards beating Scott Stajcer for his third of the year.
Wheeling took a 2-1 lead early in the third with a Chris Barton rebound goal. Paul Crowder made the initial shot that Stajcer denied but a huge rebound was left for Barton to clean up for his 14th of the year. The lead lasted 4:55 as Sean Berkstresser tied the game at two with a backhander that beat Peter Delmas five-hole. Lee Baldwin gave a long pass to Johnston who fed Berkstresser for his 11th of the year. This goal forced overtime but neither team converted in the extra frame. The game entered shootouts and only Barton scored to give Wheeling the victory. Barton, the game's first star collected a goal, an assist and the shootout winner. Delmas won his 10th game of the year with 35 saves and was the game's third star. Stajcer saved 34 of 36 shots and was awarded the game's second star.
The Road Warriors begin a three game series on Friday night at 7 p.m. against the South Carolina Stingrays. The game can be heard via America One or by clicking the listen live link on the Road Warriors homepage!
