Justin Vaive Named Rampage 2012-13 IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year

SAN ANTONIO (April 11, 2013) - The San Antonio Rampage are proud to announce that Justin Vaive has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the San Antonio community during the 2012-13 season.

In his second year with the Rampage, Vaive volunteered in numerous activities to better the San Antonio community. Vaive participated in two Team Up Challenge events as a part of Silver and Black Give Back to help local students apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world. In these projects, Vaive assisted students at Brackenridge High School in establishing an afterschool fitness program and also helped students construct an outdoor classroom at the Crossroads Center.

Throughout the season, the Buffalo, N.Y., native created a strong bond with his Face-Off Against Kids Cancer buddy, Marcos Serrato. Through a number of social events, including a pizza and board game party and a night exploring an indoor playground, Vaive established a lasting friendship with Marcos and his family. The Face-Off Against Kids Cancer program pairs a Rampage player with a child from the Centers for Oncology and Blood Disorders at the Children's Hospital of San Antonio to increase awareness about childhood cancer in the community.

In addition, Vaive participated in the Stick with Reading Program and read to elementary school students at W.W. White Elementary School. To help promote the Rampage's sixth annual Pucks and Paws night, Vaive volunteered at the Animal Defense League, a local "no kill" shelter, by walking several dogs and assisting in the maintenance and cleaning of the facilities. On Pucks and Paws Night, more than 20 dogs were adopted during the Rampage game.

Vaive is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2012-13 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League on April 18.

The Rampage travel to Houston for a two-game series tonight (Thursday) and Saturday in the team's final two road games of the year. Puck drop for both contests against the Aeros is 7:05 p.m. The Silver and Black will return home on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. tilt against the Texas Stars in the final Express-News Sunday Funday of the year.
