Demers To Be Honored As Golden Stripes Award Winner This Weekend

April 11, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons will honor recently-retired AHL linesman Marty Demers as the club's 2013 recipient of its annual "Golden Stripes Award" this Saturday before its game against the Providence Bruins at the MassMutual Center.

The Golden Stripes Award is presented annually by the Falcons to a local on-ice official who is dedicated to hockey, promotes fair play, reflects a positive attitude, and communicates effectively. Recipients of this award also must have shown an overwhelming desire to give back to the officiating community by volunteering their time off the ice to the game while leaving a positive and lasting impression on his peers.

Demers completed a 33-year officiating career on Mar. 17 in a game between the Falcons and the Connecticut Whale in Hartford, Conn. A native of Suffield, Conn., Demers worked over 1,000 AHL contests in his career while also officiating at the 1980 Winter Olympics, the 1986 and 1992 NCAA Frozen Four championships, and the 1999 AHL All-Star Classic. In 2003, Demers received the AHL's Michael Condon Memorial Award, given annually to an on-ice official for outstanding service to the league.

The Falcons clinched a spot in the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs and won the F.G. (Teddy) Oke Trophy as the Northeast Division champions this past weekend. Springfield heads to Adirondack on Friday before returning home for its final two home games of the regular season this Saturday and Sunday, hosting Providence and Connecticut at the MassMutual Center in an event-filled Fan Appreciation Weekend.
