Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp suffered their sixth consecutive loss on Saturday, falling 8-1 to the Durham Bulls in front of a reduced capacity sellout crowd of 3,496 at 121 Financial Ballpark.
Jacksonville (13-10) has now scored just two runs in their last 42 innings at the plate. The Jumbo Shrimp have been outscored 48-10 over the course of the six-game skid. Meanwhile, Durham (17-6) has now won eight straight games, outscoring their opponents 57-23 over that stretch.
Leading 1-0 in the third inning, Nathan Lukes ripped a two-run double off the warning track in center field to score Kevin Padlo and Deivy Grullón, who had walked and doubled, respectively.
Despite surrendering three runs early, Jacksonville starter Braxton Garrett (loss, 2-1) settled down nicely in the middle innings. Garrett struck out the side in the fourth, and finished with seven strikeouts in five innings of work.
Jacksonville scored their lone run of the game in the third inning. Lewis Brinson, who began his rehab assignment Saturday with the Jumbo Shrimp, ripped a double off the wall in center with one out. Jesús Sánchez then followed with an RBI single to score Brinson, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Durham would add on with the long ball. In the sixth, Joseph Odem snuck a two-run homer just over the short wall in right field to make it a 6-1 lead.
In the ninth, Grullón launched a moonshot to left field to expand the lead to 8-1. Seven of the eight Durham runs in the game scored with two outs.
Jacksonville threatened multiple times but could not score any more. The club went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, stranding 10 men on base. Bryson Brigman did tally a two-hit game and reached base three times for the second consecutive night.
The Jumbo Shrimp will look to salvage the finale at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday as they send right-hander Josh A. Smith (1-0, 4.76) to the hill to duel with Durham right-hander Adrian De Horta (0-1, 10.45).
Gates open at 2 p.m. for Sunday Family FUNDay presented by Baptist Health, featuring face painting, balloon animals, and postgame kids-run-the bases. Prior to the contest, the Jumbo Shrimp and Hearts 4 Minds will unveil a community mural designed to bring the entirety of Jacksonville together. The mural, sponsored by Baptist Health, is made up of handprints and will also include a QR code to connect people in Jacksonville to needed resources to address mental health.
The broadcast will begin at 2:50 p.m. on ESPN 690 and online at espn690.com, MiLB.tv, and the MiLB First Pitch app.
