Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Beloit, WI - With two outs and runners on second and third in the bottom of the eighth, Beloit's Josh Zamora deposited a ball into left field, scoring both runners, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead, a score that would be the final Friday night at ABC Supply Stadium.
Cedar Rapids has dropped all four games to begin the six-game set in Beloit, but in all four contests, it's scored first. In the top of the second inning, Noah Cardenas roped a triple to begin the frame, and Tanner Schobel drove him in on an RBI single to give the Kernels an early 1-0 lead.
The two squads would trade runs in the top and bottom halves of the second and the third innings. After Cedar Rapids went up 1-0, Ynmanol Marinez evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly. In the third, a Kala'i Rosario ground out drove home a Cedar Rapids run to put the Kernels back in front, 2-1, before a bases-loaded hit by pitch taken by Davis Bradshaw tied the score again 2-2.
Both runs scored by Beloit in the first three frames were charred to Marco Raya. The right-hander, in his Cedar Rapids debut, struck out the side in order in the first inning, before allowing runs in the second and third. His final line read: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K.
The game stayed tied until the top of the seventh inning when Willie Joe Garry Jr. blasted a solo home run to right field to give the Kernels the lead for the first time in this series after the fifth inning, 3-2.
That was the score in the bottom of the eighth inning when after a single and an error put runners on second and third, Zamora would drop in a two-run hit to give the Sky Carp a 4-3 advantage.
Cedar Rapids went down in order in the top of the ninth to drop its seventh straight contest and to fall to 5-7 on the season. With the win, Beloit improves to 9-4 and looks to take game five of the series tomorrow afternoon. Orlando Rodriguez makes his first start of the season for Cedar Rapids against Beloit's Luis Palacios at 3:05.
