
Jacksonville Splits Series in Front of 10,280

Jacksonville, Fla.- Despite home runs by Austin Allen and Peyton Burdick, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp dropped Monday's contest 8-5 to the Durham Bulls in front of 10,280 fans at 121 Financial Ballpark. It marked Jacksonville's biggest crowd in four years.
With the score tied at five, in the seventh inning, the Bulls (42-38, 3-3) were able to retake the lead. A leadoff walk by Niko Hulszier and a double by Kameron Misner put runners on the corners. Osleivis Basabe drove both runners in with a single off Jumbo Shrimp (35-44, 3-3) reliever Geoff Hartlieb (1-3), putting Durham (42-38, 3-3) ahead by two runs.
In the top of the eighth inning, Ben Gamel (8) homered for the second time, tacking on another run setting the final margin at 8-5.
Durham struck first in the game, thanks to a Curtis Mead (3) solo home run in the opening frame.
Tristan Gray (15) tacked on another run for the Bulls with a blast of his own, making it 2-0 in the top of the second inning.
Jordan Groshans reached on a one-out walk in the bottom of the second frame. Two batters later, Charles Leblanc laced an RBI double, plating Jacksonville's first run of the game.
The Jumbo Shrimp took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Xavier Edwards led off with a single and Jacob Amaya reached on an error. Allen (16) clubbed a three-run shot, putting the Jumbo Shrimp ahead 4-2.
Peyton Burdick (14) launched a solo shot to tack on to Jacksonville's lead in the fourth frame.
With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Hulsizer singled. Misner tripled scored Hulsizer, cutting into Jacksonville's lead at 5-3.
Durham tied the game in the top of the sixth. With one out, Ruben Cardenas singled, and in the ensuing at-bat, Gamel (7) homered, making it 5-5.
Ryan Thompson (3-0) worked 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for the Bulls. Trevor Brigden worked 2.0 shutout frames of his own to pick up his first save.
Jacksonville heads to Charlotte to kick off their six-game series versus the Knights Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. The Jumbo Shrimp will start LHP Devin Smeltzer (2-4, 6.65 ERA) and the Knights will hand the ball to RHP Chase Solesky (0-2, 6.75 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on ESPN 690 and espn690.com.
