Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Albuquerque tops Z's in nightcap, 6-1, after dropping opener, 5-1
Joe Dillon and Jason Wood each hit two-run homers and starter Ariel Prieto came one out from dealing a shut out to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes (64-58) to a 6-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs (56-62) in the nightcap of a doubleheader Sunday night at Isotopes Park. The victory salvaged a split for the âTopes as the Z's topped Albuquerque, 5-1, in the opener.
Wood's homer keyed a three-run first inning and Dillon's round-tripper highlighted a three-run fourth as Prieto (7-5) baffled the New Orleans batters in a seven-inning, complete-game effort. Dee Brown homered with two outs in the seventh inning to deny Prieto a shut out, but the veteran right hander had the last laugh as he held the Z's to just four hits on the night.
James Shanks led off the âTopes' first inning with a single, moved to second on a walk to Josh Wilson, and scored on a ground out by Todd Sears. Wood capped off the inning with his 17th homer of the year that gave Albuquerque a 3-0 lead. Shanks sparked the âTopes' other big inning with a lead-off triple in the fourth and came around to score on a base hit by Wilson. Dillon followed with his team-leading 21st homer of 2005.
New Orleans starter John Halama (1-0) and two relievers combined to limit the Isotopes to three hits and one unearned run in the Zephyrs' 5-1 victory in game one. Halama went the first five innings before C.J. Nikowski and Joe Horgan finished out the game with two scoreless frames.
The Zephyrs took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Kevin Orie homered off âTopes starter Travis Smith (3-7) with Rick Short on first base and made it 3-0 in the third thanks to an RBI single by Marlon Byrd. The âTopes scored an unearned run in the home half to cut the lead to 3-1 when Shanks plated Chris Ashby with a single to right field. New Orleans put the game out of reach with single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings. While Smith didn't get much help from his offense, the fielders behind him did their part with three double plays during the seven-inning contest.
The âTopes will conclude the front end of their eight-game homestand with the final game of a four-game series against the New Orleans Zephyrs Monday night at 7:05. Right-handed pitcher Frank Castillo (9-8, 5.25) is expected to get the start for Albuquerque against left-handed pitcher Matt White (6-5, 3.44). Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
