Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
TODAY: The Royals host the I-Cubs in game 3 of a 4-game series. Omaha leads the series 2-0 and is 8-2 on the home stand. Air-time is 1:15 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
LAST NIGHT: Down 4-1 going into the bottom of the 8th, the Royals rallied for six runs off two Iowa relievers to down the Cubs 7-5. Raul Valdes (5-6) surrendered three hits and a walk to start the inning, including RBI singles by Justin Gemoll and Chad Santos. With their closer Jermaine Van Buren off to attend a wedding, the Cubs turned to Talley Haines to save the game. However, Chris Truby's sacrifice fly tied the game and with two outs, Haines issued back-to-back walks to load the bases. Aaron Guiel cleared them with a three-run double to right-center, putting the Royals on top 7-4. Santiago Ramirez allowed one unearned run on a couple hits in the 9th, but finished for his 12th save. Jaime Cerda (4-1) got the win by tossing 2.0 scoreless stanzas.
ROYALS REPORT: The Royals have won 14 of their last 17 games, picking up 4.5 games on Nashville, but still trail the Sounds by 9.0 games in the PCL's American Conference North. Over that stretch, the Royals are hitting .293 as a team and have out-scored their foes 107-79. *** Guiel continues to be a Cub-killer. In the first two games of this series, he's 4-for-8 with a home run and five RBI. On the season, Guiel is hitting .324 (12-37) with three homers and nine RBI in the ten games vs. Iowa. *** It's not often that a reliever will log four wins in five appearances. But, that's exactly what Cerda has done for Omaha since July 29. Over his last six outings, Cerda has given up just one earned in 9.1 innings for a 0.93 ERA. *** Santos is 5-for-7 (.714) in the first two games of this series, knocking in three runs. The Hawiian slugger had been in a 4-for-34 (.118) funk prior to the Cubs arrival. *** Matt Diaz broke out of an 0-for-14 slide at the plate with a 6th inning single, adding a double in the 8th last night. Over his past 21 tilts, Diaz is hitting at a .457 pace (42-92) with five homers and 21 RBI. *** In the ten games of this home stand, Adrian Brown is hitting .432 (16-37), scoring ten runs and driving in seven. *** Gemoll is 4-for-12 (.333) with a home run and four RBI in his past four contests. He had hit just .200 (13-65) over his previous 17 games. *** Justin Huber owns a .344 average (11-32) over his past nine games; the stretch included his first Triple-A homer, which was a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the 7th Thursday to give the Royals a 4-3 win over Tucson. *** Prior to last night's late rally, the Royals were just 3-44 when trailing after seven innings this season. The win was Omaha's 29th come-from-behind victory and improved the Royals to 13-12 in games decided in the final at-bat. *** Luis Ugueto snapped an 0-for-13 skid with his hustle double in the 3rd inning last night. *** Haines had walked just one batter in 19.1 innings for Iowa this year, before giving Ugueto and Brown back-to-back free passes in the 8th inning last night, setting the stage for Guiel's heroics.
STARTERS: RH Sergio Mitre (4-4, 4.14) vs. RH Dennis Tankersley (8-6, 4.60) Tankersley makes his 19th start (28th appearance) of the season. The 26-year old right-hander's last start was Tuesday vs. Tucson, with Tankersley getting the win in a 3-2 triumph (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R-1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR). In his last three starts, "Tank" is 1-0 with a 2.81 ERA (16.0 IP, 5 ER). In two starts vs. Iowa, he's 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA. KC acquired Tankersley from the Padres along with Terrence Long and cash in exchange for Darrell May and Ryan Bukvich last November. In 2004, he appeared in 9 games (6 starts) for San Diego, going 0-5 with a 5.14 ERA. In 19 starts for Portland, he was 7-4 and had a 3.15 ERA, which ranked 2nd in the PCL, trailing only Les Walrond of Omaha (3.06). Tankersley was the Red Sox' 38th round pick in the 1998 draft.
PROBABLES FOR REMAINDER OF SERIES: Mon., 7:05: RH Todd Wellemeyer (3-2, 3.02) vs. RH Ryan Jensen (1-7, 6.00)
