Oklahoma City Comets News Release

The Oklahoma RedHawks won a back-and-forth game against the Round Rock Express Sunday to get back in first place in their division.

The RedHawks used a four-run sixth inning to help them beat Round Rock 6-5 at Dell Diamond. The win and Albuquerque's split of a doubleheader with New Orleans puts Oklahoma in first place by one half game over Round Rock and Albuquerque.

Round Rock got on the board first with a run in the second inning on a single by Charles Gipson. The RedHawks took their first lead in the fifht with two runs scored on a sacrifice fly by Keith McDonald and a wild pitch.

However, the Express answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs on a single by Chris Tremie to put them ahead 3-2. However, the Express left the bases loaded in the inning.

The RedHawks then scored four runs in the sixth to re-take the lead. Will Smith drove in a run with a single to left and Drew Meyer had a sacrifice fly to give the RedHawks the lead. Ian Kinsler followed with a two-RBI double for needed insurance runs.

Round Rock made the score 6-5 in the eighth inning on a double by Carlos Rivera. Again, they left the bases loaded in the inning.

Jose Veras came on for the RedHawks in the ninth inning and stranded the tying run on third and the winning run on second. It was his 17th save of the year, making him one away from tying the single-season and career record by a RedHawk. Allen McDill had 18 in 1999 and Brad Clontz had 18 last season.

The RedHawks finish their series and road trip against Round Rock at 7:05 p.m. Monday at Dell Diamond.
