Portland Beavers News Release
Portland wins fourth straight while raising more than $10,000 for The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
PORTLAND, Ore. -Jesse Garcia went 3-for-5 with a home run and seven RBIs and the Portland Beavers raised thousands of dollars for The Susan G. Komen Foundation as they soundly defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 13-3 before 6,817 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.
As part of their "Strike Out Breast Cancer" event on Sunday, the Beavers wore special pink jerseys that were auctioned off to fans. A silent auction of the jerseys grossed more than $3,000 for The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, while Health Net, the presenting partner of the game, presented a check for $7,000 to the Komen Foundation as part of its season-long program to donate $200 per home victory.
Garcia had a pair of two-run bloop singles and punctuated his day with a three-run homer that narrowly cleared the left-center field wall in the seventh. Garcia, who was batting .188 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 49 games with the Beavers prior to Sunday, set a new five-year franchise record with his seven runs driven in.
Greg Sain went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored for the Beavers, who have won four straight and six of their last eight. Josh Barfield clubbed his 11th home run among his three hits.
Mike Thompson (3-1) worked 8.0 solid innings for his third win with Portland. Thompson gave up three runs on seven hits.
Garcia broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth with the first of his two bloop two-run singles.
The Beavers (58-63) opened up the throttle in the sixth, pushing their lead to 8-1 with five runs in the inning. Nick Trzesniak drove in Sain with an RBI single, Garcia added his second two-run single, and Barfield cleared the wall in left field with a two-run homer.
Garcia's three-run blast upped the lead to 11-1 in the seventh before Eddy Garabito clubbed a two-run shot off Thompson in the top of the eighth.
Sain capped the scoring with a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth.
Sky Sox starter Justin Hampson suffered his 12th loss of the season by surrendering eight runs (7 earned) on 11 hits over 5.1 innings of work.
Ryan Shealy's solo shot - his 21st of the season - put the Sky Sox (55-66) up 1-0 in the second inning.
The Beavers responded in the third, tying things when catcher Todd Greene dropped a pop up in front of the plate, allowing Dustin Delucchi to score with two outs.
NOTES: Padres right-hander Adam Eaton will start Monday's game for the Beavers. Eaton is currently on a major league rehab assignment.
