Iowa Cubs News Release
TACOMA, WA - Donnie Dewees homered on the second pitch of the game to set the scene as the Iowa Cubs (60-52) sank the Tacoma Rainiers (51-61) 11-7, Saturday at Cheney Stadium.
After building an early 2-1 lead, Iowa broke the game open with a four-run third. A Zack Short walk and a Phillip Evans single set up a three-run home run for Mark Zagunis. Two pitches later, Addison Russell went deep to make it 6-1.
The Rainiers didn't make it easy on the I-Cubs as an Eric Filia homer plated two in the fourth. Iowa responded with another run in the fifth, batted in by Russell, before Tacoma brought in another two on three consecutive doubles in the home half of the inning.
With its lead diminished to two, Iowa's offense surged for another four-spot in the seventh. The first four batters of the inning reached on three hits and a hit by pitch. Russell batted in his fourth run of the night with a single and Jim Adduci brought in two with a base hit. P.J. Higgins capped the inning with an RBI double.
Iowa's pitching eventually ran out and after James Norwood loaded the bags in the ninth, outfielder Dewees took the hill. Dewees gave up an RBI single to Kelby Tomlinson and walked in another before securing the game's final out.
Fresh off a two-week stay on the Injured List, Adbert Alzolay used 47 pitches to work 2.1 innings. The righty was tagged with one unearned run on one hit, walked two and struck out three. Dillon Maples (2-4) came away with the victory after 2.0 shutout frames.
