Iowa Cubs News Release
ROUND ROCK, TX - Ryan Court hit the second pitch of the game out of the park to give the Iowa Cubs (5-21) the lead, but they couldn't hold on as the Round Rock Express (11-18) claimed a 4-3 comeback victory, Friday at Dell Diamond.
Court homered for his second-consecutive game and punched Iowa's first leadoff bomb since John Andreoli on Aug. 1, 2017. Court now leads the team with four long balls in 2018.
After retiring the first six Express batters in order, Alec Mills ran into trouble in the third. The first three batters of the inning reached, concluded by an RBI double from Hanser Alberto. Mills worked two key strikeouts and was almost out of the inning, but handed a walk to Scott Heineman before a bases-loaded double from Willie Calhoun brought in two and gave Round Rock the 3-1 lead.
Mills found his groove following the third and after a giving up a leadoff triple in the fourth, retired 11-straight batters to wrap up his night. Mills exited after 7.0, with three earned runs allowed on three hits and two walks. He struck out a season-best seven batters.
Iowa made it interesting as Mike Freeman lined a leadoff double in the ninth, moved to third on a groundout and made it home on an infield single from Jacob Hannemann. Hannemann made into scoring position on a wild pitch, before David Bote took advantage with a two-strike, two-out liner up the middle to knot the game.
Round Rock had a comeback brewing of its own. Tony Sanchez collected a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth and moved up a bag on a fly out. Cory Mazzoni had the potential third out down on strikes, but a wild throw led to a dropped third strike. Catcher Taylor Davis' throw to first sailed high and Sanchez scored from second to secure a walk-off victory for the Express.
Bote led the offense, going 2-for-4 with one walk and one RBI. Efren Navarro reached three times with two walks and a single.
The I-Cubs and Express meet again at Dell Diamond tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. CT. Tune in on AM 940, www.iowacubs.com or MiLB.TV.
