Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (11-18) picked up an unconventional 4-3 victory over the Iowa Cubs (5-21) on Friday night, scoring the game-winning run on a third strike wild pitch followed by a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Express reliever RHP Adrian Sampson (2-2, 6.93) picked up the win despite allowing a pair of runs on four hits and a walk in 2.0 innings of relief. Cubs RHP Cory Mazzoni (0-2, 2.31) suffered the loss after giving up the game-winning run on two hits in the bottom of the ninth.
The visitors needed just two pitches to take the lead as 3B Ryan Court connected on a David Hurlbut offering, lining the pitch over the wall in right field to give Iowa a quick 1-0 lead. The longball proved to be Hurlbut's only miscue as the lefty surrendered just one run on four hits while striking out four in 5.2 innings of work.
Round Rock responded in the third as RF Jose Cardona worked a leadoff walk prior to an Andy Ibanez single. SS Hanser Alberto then leveled the game at 1-1 with a double. Three hitters later, LF Willie Calhoun sent two more runs home with a double that pushed the gap to 3-1.
Iowa leveled the game in the top of the ninth as SS Mike Freeman tallied a leadoff double then raced to third on a Chris Gimenez groundout. An ensuing Jacob Hannemann single brought the Cubs within 3-2. After a Sampson wild pitch, 2B David Bote singled home Hannemann to tie the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the frame, C Tony Sanchez and RF Jose Cardona collected back-to-back singles. Sanchez was then replaced at second base by pinch runner Destin Hood. Ibanez struck out swinging in the next at-bat, however Mazzoni's pitch skipped past C Taylor Davis. The backstop then threw an errant relay to first base, allowing Hood to race home with the game-winning run.
The Express now transform into the Round Rock Armadillos for Fear the Walking Dead night on Saturday. Armadillos RHP David Ledbetter (0-3, 5.28) is set to face Cubs RHP Adbert Alzolay (2-1, 2.12). First pitch at Dell Diamond is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
