Dubon Stretches Hit Streak to 22 in Game One Loss

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Sky Sox dropped the first of four in Oklahoma City on Friday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark with a 5-1 final. Despite matching the Dodgers in the hits category with eight, the Sky Sox went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, plating their lone run in the eighth inning.

Mauricio Dubon highlighted the Sky Sox offense, going 3-for-4 while extending his hit streak to 22 games, marking the longest hitting streak by a Sky Sox player since Matt Murton tied the team record of 29 straight games in 2009. Right-hander Bubba Derby (1-1), who made his sixth start of 2018, just missed a quality start after tossing six and one-third innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits while striking out a season-high seven batters.

Oklahoma City broke into the offense early on in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead over the Sky Sox. Jake Peter led off for the Dodgers with a single to center field. After a wild pitch and groundout to send Peter to third base, Rob Segedin plated Peter on his sacrifice fly ball to center field.

In the very next Dodgers' frame, Oklahoma City extended their lead with three more runs. Kyle Garlick started the frame off by taking first after being hit by a pitch and Cael Brockmeyer followed up with an infield single to quickly make it a first and second situation with no outs. After a force out to third base on Wes Darvill's groundball to third, Mike Ahmed struck a single to plate a run while Dodgers' starting pitcher Manny Banuelos supported his cause by sending a double to center field and give Oklahoma City a 4-0 advantage.

In the seventh, the Dodgers added on some insurance with a solo run after the frame started on an error off the bat of Mike Ahmed. With reliever Jon Perrin in for Derby with one-out, Peter singled to center field and put runners on the corners. Henry Ramos would continue the rhythm with a groundball single to right field to bring in Ahmed.

In the eighth, the Sky Sox were able to muster a single run to avoid the shutout. Following back-to-back singles by Shane Opitz and Nate Orf, a wild pitch during Dubon's at-bat would send them each into scoring position. Dubon and Ji-Man Choi failed to get the job done as they both went down on strikes. But, during Jacob Nottingham's two-out at-bat, a wild pitch would successfully plate Opitz to put the Sky Sox on the board, making it a 5-1 contest.

The Sky Sox enter into game two of the eight-game road trip. Tomorrow's second game against Oklahoma City is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. MST at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The Sky Sox return to Security Service Field for an eight-game, nine-day homestand on May 12 where they will host the Oklahoma City Dodgers and Memphis Redbirds. Dubon Extends to 22: Mauricio Dubon extended his hit streak to 22 games Friday night, joining notable Sky Sox alumni Todd Helton (1997) and Neifi Perez (1997). The Honduras native has gone 34-for-96 over 22 games with 18 runs, four home runs, 17 RBI, and five stolen bases. His longest recorded streak in 2017 with the Sky Sox was seven games. Alumnus at 23 includes Garrett Atkins (2004), Ben Patrick (2000), Neifi Perez (1996), and Wayne Kirby (1992).

Streak In Comparison: Mauricio Dubon's 22-game hit streak marks the longest for a Sky Sox player during their affiliation with the Milwaukee Brewers, and the longest hitting streak by a Sky Sox player since Matt Murton tied the team record of 29 straight games in 2009. The previous longest Sky Sox hitting streak during the Milwaukee Brewers affiliation was set last season by Lewis Brinson, a 20-game hitting streak from June 29th to August 5th, 2017. The longest hitting streak in Sky Sox history is 29 games, shared by Trenidad Hubbard (July 5th[Game 1] to August 7th, 1995) and by Matt Murton (April 15th-17th and June 6th-21st, 2009).

Swipin' Bagsss: The three stolen bases Friday night by Mauricio Dubon ties the Sky Sox record for stolen bases in a road game, done five other times. The other five: Reggie Taylor, July 27th, 1991 at Las Vegas, Wayne Kirby, May 9th, 1992 at Phoenix, Trenidad Hubbard, June 19th, 1995 at Vancouver (Game 1 of DH), Eric Young, Jr., July 28th, 2010 at Sacramento, Orlando Arcia, April 26th, 2016 at Omaha. The club record for stolen bases in a game is four, done three times, all at home in Colorado Springs (Jeff Huson, August 30th, 1996, home vs. Albuquerque; Luis Sardiñas, May 1st, 2015, home vs. Omaha; Kyle Wren, July 4th, 2017, home vs. Nashville.)

Orf Trending: With streaks trending, Nate Orf has himself a 15-game streak, which was continued Friday night. In 15 games, Orf has gone 26-for-56 with 14 runs, 12 RBI, and three stolen bases. His longest streak last season was nine games.

Always On: Kyle Wren has reached base safely in all 13 games with the Sky Sox this season and extended his hit streak to nine games Friday. The West Palm Beach, FL native is batting .391 (18-for-46) with 9 runs, 3 doubles, a triple, 11 RBI, and 5 walks this season. Kyle Wren's single in the second inning was his 319th regular season hit with the Sky Sox, passing Jim Tatum for sole possession of 14th place on the Sky Sox all-time hits list, and could move up several spots during this road trip. The single also marked his 248th regular season single with the Sky Sox, passing Jason Bates for sole possession of sixth place on the all-time singles list.

Errorless No More: The Sky Sox committed their first error Friday night after going errorless over the last four games.

Hit Parade: The Sky Sox collected season-high 20 hits on Monday night against the Nashville Sounds. The previous high set this season was 15 that happened both on April 25 and 26 against Omaha. The highest amount of hits the Sky Sox have recorded as a franchise is 32, which was set on May 7, 1988 vs. Phoenix at Spurgeon Stadium. The highest amount of hits by the Sky Sox ever at Security Service Field is 27, which was set June 8, 2005 against Fresno.

Extra Bases: After totaling 28 extra-base hits over the last five games, the Sky Sox posted zero Friday night. After totaling six extra-base hits Sunday and nine on Monday, the Sky Sox went on to smack eight hits for extra bases Tuesday night including four doubles (Broxton, Taylor, Orf [2]), two triples (Dubon, Wren), and two home runs (Bethancourt, Dubon). On Wednesday and Thursday, the squad combined for five more.

Tomorrow's Expectation: In the second game of the four-game series against the Dodgers, the Sky Sox are sending right-hander Brandon Woodruff, who was recently optioned by Milwaukee, to the mound to face righty Brock Stewart for the Dodgers.

This Week's Preview: The Sky Sox are on the road for eight games. The Sky Sox will be in Oklahoma City to play a four-game series against the Dodgers for the first time this season before going to Nashville to play the Sounds for four more games.
