DES MOINES, IA - The Memphis Redbirds (36-53) snuck a 5-4 victory by the Iowa Cubs (51-38), Saturday at Principal Park.
The I-Cubs were first to strike as they nabbed an unearned run in the first inning. Ian Happ walked with one out, moved to third on a Mark Zagunis double before trotting home on a fielding error on the third baseman.
The Redbirds quickly evened the score as a one-out single from Andrew Knizner in the second turned into a run on an Irving Lopez double.
Adbert Alzolay recorded six strikeouts through three before hitting a speed bump in the fourth. The first three runners of the inning reached, putting Memphis up by one. The tone was set as the Redbirds batted around and posted a four-run frame. Iowa went to the bullpen with one out as Alzolay ended his night with five earned runs on four hits and three walks through 3.1 innings.
Trailing 5-1, Iowa got back in the game in the fifth. Back-to-back doubles from Zack Short and Francisco Arcia shrunk the gap and a Donnie Dewees two-run bomb pulled the I-Cubs within a run. The home team couldn't complete the comeback as the last 10 batters were retired in order by Memphis pitching.
Iowa's bullpen put together another scoreless outing with contributions from Craig Brooks (2.2IP), Dakota Mekkes (1.2IP), Tim Collins (0.1IP) and Rowan Wick (1.0). The four combined to allowed three hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
Harold Arauz (4-2) took the win, Alzolay (2-2) the loss and Ryan Helsley earned the save (1).
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Ian Happ is went 2-for-3 with a walk and is 8-for-17 (.470) with one double, one triple, two home runs, four RBI and seven walks through a five-game hitting streak.
- Mark Zagunis went 2-for-4 and is leading the I-Cubs with a .310 batting average.
- Iowa's bullpen spun a scoreless 5.2 innings and holds a 1.82 ERA (11ER/54.1IP) since June 22.
