Hagerstown Suns News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - An inside-the-park home run by Travis Mattair of the Lakewood BlueClaws ended up being the difference in the Hagerstown Suns 3-2 loss on Tuesday.
Mattair, facing reliever Austin Garret, hit a line drive to left-center field with one out in the seventh inning. Suns left fielder Valerio Heredia made a dove for the ball, but it slipped by him and ended up wedged under the protective padding on the left-center field fence.
Center fielder Chris Curran attempted to call attention to the lodged ball as Mattair circled the bases, but retrieved the ball from under the fence before base umpire Jay Pierce could determine if the hit should be ruled a ground-rule double.
The drive from Mattair broke a 2-2 tie, as the Suns had rallied from two runs down in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs and two runners on in the sixth, Travis Reagan came through for the Suns with a double down the right field line driving in both JR Higley and and Steven Souza.
Both Suns runs came off Lakewood reliever Eryk McConnell. McConnell (1-1) ended up earning the victory as the BlueClaws took the lead during his three innings of work.
Garret (4-5) took the loss, though the lefthander pitched quite well. Garret allowed just one run on two hits in two and two thirds innings of work while striking out one BlueClaw.
AJ Morris got the start for Hagerstown and pitched five innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. The righthander did not surrender a walk, though he did hit a batter in the fifth inning.
Morris was matched up against Trevor May who also pitched well. May tossed five scoreless innings of three-hit baseball, though he did walk four batters while striking out six.
The Suns and Shorebirds will finish their three-game series at FirstEnergy Park on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. The contest will be the final road game of the 2009 season for Hagerstown. The Suns still have a five-game series against the Lake County Captains starting on Thursday, September 3rd.
