AUGUSTA, Ga. - Ari Ronick (7-5) was nearly perfect in the first game while Andrew Reichard (4-4) and the GreenJackets bullpen were good enough in the second as Augusta swept a doubleheader from Savannah Tuesday night. With the losses, Savannah falls to three games below .500.
Ronick, who was winless against Savannah in six previous starts, finally put himself in the win column in the first game with some help from his offense as the 'Jackets won, 7-0. The 23-year-old Ronick was perfect through five before Nick Giarraputo broke up the perfect bid with a single to start the sixth. Newly promoted Sand Gnat Alonzo Harris singled in the inning as well but that would be all the offense Savannah could muster.
Robert Carson (8-10) took the loss in the opener, giving up all seven runs (six earned) in four innings of work. Samuel Martinez had his best outing as a Sand Gnat in relief, throwing two scoreless innings.
The second game saw Augusta win by a score of 2-1 with Chris Wilson recording the final five outs for his eighth save of the year. Wilson was called in after the Gnats scored a run and off the starter Reichard to pull within one in the sixth. The closer allowed a hit to Raul Reyes to load the bases before striking out Kai Gronauer and Juan Lagares to end the threat and the inning.
Both of Augusta's runs in the second game were scored on wild pitches by Armando Rodriguez (1-1), who was making his second start in a Gnats uniform. The 21-year-old once again fanned nine as he worked all six innings of game two but the wild pitches proved costly in the end. He permitted just three hits in the loss.
Reyes and Wilmer Flores each had two hits in the second game for the Sand Gnats while Eric Campbell drove in the Gnats only run for his 47th RBI of the season.
Savannah (29-32, 64-67) will try and salvage the final game of the series tomorrow with the first pitch coming at 10:05 a.m. Right hander Eric Beaulac (7-7, 2.89) will make a bid for his eighth win in the morning game for the Sand Gnats while Mike Loree (8-9, 4.64) throws for the 'Jackets.
