Asheville Tourists News Release
(Asheville, NC) - The Tourists welcomed the Lexington Legends to McCormick Field for the final homestand of the 2009 regular season, dropping game one, 3-1. Asheville had plenty of opportunities to score, but could not deliver the big hit, stranding nine baserunners in the contest.
Alan DeRatt pitched around several bloop hits to go 5.0 one-run innings, but was stuck with the no-decision after leaving a tie ball game. He allowed the first run of the game when a runner scored from third on a double play in the fourth to give Lexington the 1-0 lead.
Asheville answered back in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases on three straight singles with no outs. Tyler Massey bounced into a double play which plated the tying run, but Patrick Rose struck out with the go-ahead runner on third to leave it 1-1.
DeRatt gave way to Kurt Yacko out of the bullpen, who allowed a solo homerun to Brian Pelligrini to lead off the fifth, giving the Legends a 2-1 lead. Yacko then got to business, working 2.0 innings and allowing nothing else while striking out four batters.
Lexington threatened again in the eighth inning of reliever Rex Brothers, as Brothers walked the leadoff man then hit two batsmen to load the bases with no outs. Brothers then struck out Freddy Hernandez for the first out of the inning before Albert Cartwright hit a line drive to right-center. David Christensen made a diving attempt and caught the ball, then dropped it in the outfield. The runner from third tagged up to score before Christensen collected the loose ball and caught Brian Pelligrini off first base for the third out of the inning. The run was awarded to give Lexington the 3-1 advantage, which they carried to victory.
The Augusta Greenjackets swept a doubleheader from Savannah Tuesday, cutting Asheville's lead in the Southern Division to 2.5 games and keeping their Magic Number at 4.
The Tourists (39-24) and Legends (28-36) will play game two of their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:05. Asheville RHP Carlos Luna (0-0, 7.56) will take on Lexington RHP Ross Seaton (8-10, 3.31) in game two.
