Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - Pitching - both starting and relief - was the Augusta GreenJackets key to victory in a sweep of a crucial doubleheader over the Savannah Sand Gnats with a 7-0 win in the opener and a 2-1 victory in the nightcap on Tuesday evening at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Ari Ronick tossed a complete game two-hit gem for Augusta in the opener, shutting out the Sand Gnats with five strikeouts in his first win since July 3rd. Ronick (7-5) allowed just three baserunners in the entire game, walking one to go with the two hits he allowed.

The GreenJackets led early and never looked back, with three runs in the first on RBI singles by Vladimir Frias, Josh Mazzola and Johnny Monell. Andy D'Alessio's sacrifice fly added a run in the fourth while Frias struck again in the fourth. The shortstop's two-run triple pushed the lead even higher for the GreenJackets, growing to 7-0 when Frias scored on a wild pitch.

Robert Carson (8-10) threw four innings and allowed seven runs - six earned - on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts in the loss.

Wild pitches were the theme of the game in the nightcap, as Augusta scored both of their runs on them and held on to win 2-1 over the Sand Gnats and preserve the sweep.

Despite being held to just three hits, the GreenJackets scored in the first when Francisco Peguero stole his way around the bases and scored on the first of the two Savannah errant tosses while James Simmons made it a two-run lead with his scamper to the plate in the fifth.

Savannah threatened in the sixth against a tiring Andrew Reichard. After a one-out walk to Alonzo Harris, Eric Campbell single Harris home to bring the Gnats to within a run. Chris Wilson would load the bases on a Raul Reyes infield single before striking out the last two hitters of the inning to preserve the 2-1 lead.

Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to earn his eighth save of the year to preserve the win for Reichard (4-4), who allowed one run on five hits and a walk in 5.1 solid innings, striking out a pair.

Savannah was held to just eight hits and one run in the entire doubleheader, the second time they've been swept by the GreenJackets in a twinbill in the last three weeks at Lake Olmstead Stadium. With the sweep and Asheville's loss, the Jackets move to just 2.5 games out of first with six games remaining in the 2009 regular season.

Mike Loree (8-9, 4.64) takes the ball for the GreenJackets to face Eric Beaulac (7-7, 2.89) in the finale of a three-game series that will see a very quick turnaround due to an Education Day promotion at the ballpark on Wednesday. First pitch comes at 10:05 a.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com. You may purchase seats by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
