Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads fell to the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 10-1, before 1,348 fans in the opener of the three game series at L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday evening. 2B Andres James went 2-for-3 in the game, and is now 10 for his last 11 through his last three contests.
The Grasshoppers (26-38, 63-71) got out in front with a pair of runs in the top of the second against RHP Wilmer Font (7-3) on a two-run homer by 2B Daniel Pertusati. After the Grasshoppers tacked on an unearned run against Font in the fourth inning, they then added two more in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. Greensboro then blew the lead open against RHP Andrew Doyle and RHP Corey Ragsdale with five runs in the top of the sixth inning, moving ahead, 10-0. The big blow in the frame was a bases-loaded, three-run double hit by LF Robert Taylor to cap the rally.
The Crawdads (28-36, 61-72) got on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning, striking for a run against RHP Arquimedes Caminero. LF Mike Hollander reached second base on a two-base error to start the inning, before taking third on a fly out to center field. With two away in the inning, DH Vinny DiFazio plated Hollander with an RBI single through the left side of the infield, making it 10-1.
After RHP Mark Hamburger tossed a scoreless top of the ninth inning, Greensboro LHP Andrew Loomis followed with a one-two-three bottom of the ninth to close the 10-1 win for Greensboro. Font was tagged with the loss for the Crawdads, while RHP Natividad Dilone (1-0), who pitched five shutout innings in the start, earned the win for the Grasshoppers.
