LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles announced today that the team's captain, Riley Nelson, has suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. He will remain a part of the team in the locker room for the rest of the season, providing leadership and input for the players and coaches. Nelson is the club's all-time leader in just about every offensive category, and is the only player to have played in each of the Eagles' 10 seasons of existence.

"As is so often the case, I feel that there are two sides to this situation," said Nelson. "Obviously there's extreme disappointment in a season-ending injury, but at the same time, I'm looking forward to seeing the other side of the game and helping out in any capacity that I can." The captain continued, "I'm excited about our team and the chemistry in our locker room, and I feel that although I won't be a part of it on the ice, I'm still excited to see where this teams goes the rest of the season, and hopefully I can come out onto the ice to hoist the Kelly Cup after our last game."

Nelson recorded 14 points (4-10-14) through the first 26 games this season while fighting the bum shoulder. For his career, the third captain in club history has registered 758 points (294-464-758) in 590 games with Colorado. He was a part of both of the team's Central Hockey League Championships (2005 & 2007), and was voted the CHL's Most Valuable Player in 2010-11.

"Replacing Riley's skill and leadership on the ice will not be easy, but we're happy that he'll be able to continue helping our team off the ice," said Chris Stewart, the Eagles' head coach & general manager. "He's a consummate professional with a very smart hockey mind, and his years of leadership and experience will still be very valuable assets in our locker room."
