Gwinnett Stripers News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indianapolis Indians (41-36) plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised past the Gwinnett Braves (34-44) by an 8-2 score Monday night in game one of a three-game series at Victory Field.
The G-Braves struck first against Indians starter Tyler Glasnow as Matt Tuiasosopo dropped a two-out single to left and scored from first on a double to right-center by Reid Brignac. Glasnow hadn't allowed a hit in his previous 13 innings or a run over his prior 20 frames before Monday night.
But the 1-0 lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the first, Gwinnett starter Manny Banuelos immediately ran into trouble giving up a leadoff double to Austin Meadows and an infield single to Gift Ngoepe to put runners at first and third. Max Moroff singled to left, scoring Meadows to tie the game at 1-1, then, after Banuelos retired the next two batters, Willy Garcia drove a single to center, scoring Ngoepe for a 2-1 Indians lead. Gwinnett centerfielder Matt Lipka misplayed the ball, enabling Moroff to also score to increase the lead to 3-1.
Jacob Stallings then drilled a double to right, scoring Garcia to make it 4-1. After a wild pitch moved Stallings to third, Pedro Florimon drove him home with a single to right-center for the fifth run of the inning.
The Indians added a run to go up 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a bloop RBI single by Ngoepe off of Gwinnett reliever Ryan Weber. It went to 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth, when a single by Stallings off Weber plated Garcia from second.
The Braves second and final run of the night came in the top of the sixth as Tuiasosopo led off with a double to left-center and moved to third on a double to right-center by Brignac. A ground out to shortstop by Rio Ruiz scored Tuiasosopo and cut the lead to 7-2.
But in the top of the eighth, Moroff connected on his seventh home run of the season, off Rob Wooten, to make the final 8-2.
Banuelos (L, 0-2) lasted only 1.0 inning, allowing six hits and five runs (four earned). Weber worked 4.0 innings of relief, yielding five hits and two runs (one earned) while walking one and striking out six. Brandon Cunniff worked a scoreless bottom of the sixth and Bradley Roney tossed a scoreless seventh. Wooten allowed a run on one hit in his 1.0 inning.
For Indianapolis, Glasnow (W, 7-2) allowed four hits and two runs in 6.0 innings. He struck out five and walked four. Kelvin Marte worked 2.0 innings registering two strikeouts and Dovydas Neverauskas worked a scoreless top of the ninth.
Gwinnett was led by Tuiasosopo who went 2-for-3 with two runs and his team leading 17th double. Brignac was 2-for-4 with two doubles and Ruiz went 0-for-3 with an RBI to see his 11-game hitting streak come to an end. However, he did draw a walk in the fourth to up his on-base streak to 17 games. Anthony Recker's 12-game hitting streak ended with an 0-for-2 night.
For the Indians, Moroff continued his dominance of Gwinnett pitching with a 3-for-4 night with two runs, two RBIs and a solo homer. He has now gone 8-of-16 with five runs and five RBIs in the five games played between the two teams. Austin Meadows was 3-for-4 with two runs, a double and a triple and Stallings was 2-for-4 with a run.
The G-Braves and Indians continue the three-game series Tuesday night at Victory Field. Righty Chris Ellis (0-2, 18.00) is scheduled for the G-Braves and will oppose right-hander Trevor Williams (2-3, 5.01). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and Tony Schiavone has the call of the action beginning at 6:35 p.m. on 97.7 FM.
