June 27, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Red Wings dropped a 6-2 contest to the Pawtucket Red Sox Monday night at Frontier Field. It was the fourth straight loss for the Wings, who dropped into second place behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m., with Red Sox Hall of Famer Luis Tiant here to sign autographs. Complete promotions details below....
The Red Wings came into Monday's game with a three-game losing streak, and starter Pat Dean was coming off his poorest performance of the season: a loss in Columbus June 22, where he gave up eight hits and seven earned runs in six innings. Dean had an easy first inning Monday, with a pop out, strikeout, and groundout.
PawSox starter Aaron Wilkerson returned the favor by setting down the Wings in order in the bottom of the first, including a strikeout of Miguel Sano.
After Dean gave up a pair of singles in the third inning, Henry Ramos hit a triple into the right field gap to score two runs and give Pawtucket a 2-0 lead. He managed to limit the damage by getting Chris Marrero to groundout to second to end the inning.
Wilkerson continued to dominate in the second and third innings, as he retired the first nine batters of the game. In the third inning, he picked up two strikeouts to bring his total to three for the night.
Justin Maxwell led off the fourth inning with a long double to right field, and he later made his way to third on a fielder's choice. After another quick out, Dean walked Chris Dominguez, but was able to escape the inning unscathed.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sano launched a 419-ft home run to left center, his first homer at Triple-A, to give the Wings their first hit and run of the game. One batter later, Jorge Polanco hit another homer to right field to tie the game at 2-2. After Eddie Rosario flew out to center, Kennys Vargas ripped a grounder past first baseman Chris Marrero for a two-out double. Logan Schafer then popped out to end the inning.
The PawSox answered right back in the fifth as Ramos hit a two-run single to take a 4-2 lead after Jose Vinicio walked and Jantzen Witte doubled. Ramos advanced to second on the play after an error by Sano in right field. Dean managed to get three straight outs to end the inning.
D.J. Baxendale replaced Dean to start the sixth inning. Dean (1-5) went five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking two. Wings starters have now thrown at least 5.0 innings in 49 consecutive games. Baxendale worked quickly through the sixth, as he set down the side in order.
James Beresford led off the bottom of the sixth with an infield single to extend his hitting streak to nine games. The Wings couldn't mount any sort of momentum after that, as Wilkerson struck out Sano and Rosario and got Polanco to pop out.
Sean Burnett replaced Baxendale in the seventh inning after Baxendale threw one scoreless inning. Burnett's outing started with an error by Vargas - which was his first of the season - that allowed Vinicio to reach first. Witte doubled to deep center to score Vinicio and extend the PawSox lead to 5-2. Burnett then struck out Ramos and was replaced by J.T. Chargois. While facing his first batter of the night, Chargois gave up a walk and later a wild pitch to allow the runners to advance to second and third. Aneury Tavarez hit a soft grounder to first, and this time Vargas was able to make an unassisted play at the base.
Wilkerson (4-1) began to rack up strikeouts in the seventh. He struck out Vargas and Schafer to start the inning to bring his total to eight for the game, and ended the inning by getting Adam Brett Walker to hit a grounder to third.
In the top of the eighth, Deven Marrero hit a grounder to Polanco, who made a spectacular play to make the throw to first. One batter later, Dominguez hit a line drive home run to left field to extend the PawSox lead to 6-2.
Wilkerson pitched seven innings and allowed just four hits, with the two earned runs. He did not walk a batter, struck out eight, and threw 97 pitches, 75 for strikes.
Alex Wimmers pitched the ninth inning for the Wings, getting help from a spectacular fielding play by shortstop Wilfredo Tovar on an inning-ending double play.
Pawtucket out-hit the Red Wings 11-4.
NOTES: Twins INF/OF Miguel Sano played his fourth game of a rehab assignment, playing right field and going 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk, the homer, and two strikeouts.
