RailRiders Announce Hope Week Activities

June 27, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Moosic, Pa. - What began as an ode to the parent club and the community has turned into an annual tradition in NEPA. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) are proud to announce that beginning on Monday, July 4, the RailRiders will join the New York Yankees in support of HOPE (Helping Others Persevere and Excel) Week 2016, a unique week-long communal program that brings to light extraordinary stories intended to inspire individuals into action in their own communities.

Initiated in 2009 and now in its seventh campaign in NEPA, HOPE Week is rooted in the fundamental belief that acts of goodwill provide hope and encouragement to more than just the recipient of the gesture. Each day from Monday, July 4 through Sunday, July 10, members of the RailRiders front office staff or club will reach out personally to connect with an organization, cause or individual. 2016 marks the fifth straight year that each of the Yankees' six U.S.-based affiliates will participate in the program, making the initiative one that the entire organization proudly stands behind.

On Monday, July 4, the RailRiders will celebrate Independence Day and honor the families of deceased local military. SWB will also make a $1,000 donation to Folds of Honor, an organization that creates scholarships for children of local military killed in action. The team will also raise additional funds for Folds of Honor through a Fourth of July hat auction.

The RailRiders will hold a fundraiser for the victims and families of the recent shootings in Orlando. The RailRiders will be donating half of all tickets sales to the cause, along with dollars generated from online and in-game auctions. Fans will have the opportunity to bid on one of a kind experiences, like a one-on-one meet and greet with their favorite RailRider, accepting a signed jersey off the back of their favorite Railrider post-game, autographed memorabilia, a suite for the night, and more.

From 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on July 6, players and staff will visit the Wilkes-Barre YMCA to serve lunch to underprivileged children as part of the Commission on Economic Opportunity's "Food 4 Kids" program. The RailRiders will also be delivering backpacks filled with non-perishable items for the kids to take home.

On July 7, players will meet veterans and families from the Wounded War Project from 5:30-6:00 p.m. at PNC Field. Players will wear HOPE Week caps that they will swap with veterans for their Wounded Warrior Project caps.

RailRiders players and staff will shave their heads to raise funds for pediatric cancer research when they host the Buffalo Bisons on July 8 in conjunction with the Vs. Cancer Foundation. Heads will be shaved on the field prior to post-game fireworks. To date, the RailRiders have raised upwards of $30,000 for Vs. Cancer.

Players and staff will participate in a local Habitat for Humanity building project on July 9. The home is located at 689 Barnes Street in Ashley, Pa.

HOPE week events conclude with a Challenger Little League game at PNC Field on Monday, July 10. Players and staff will serve as buddies for the Wyoming Valley Challenger Little League during their game.

HOPE Week is just a part of the RailRiders' community outreach this season, and the RailRiders look forward to continuing their involvement both during and after HOPE Week. Any inquiries regarding the weeklong festivities should be directed to RailRiders director of community relations Rachel Mark by calling 570-969-2255 (ext. 3140) or by e-mailing rmark@swbrailriders.com.

The RailRiders return home for a seven-game homestand starting on the Fourth of July against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia Phillies). The game includes post-game fireworks presented by the PA Lottery; foam light-up sticks to the first 2,500 fans through the gates thanks to ShurSave Supermarkets; USA-themed jerseys worn by the RailRiders; and Fourth-of-July hats worn by the team that will be auctioned off during the game.
