Idaho Squanders Late Lead in Loss to Bakersfield

Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID (1/26/14) - The visiting Bakersfield Condors netted three goals in the final 2:45 of play Sunday to swipe a win from the Idaho Steelheads, 3-1, in front of 4,087 fans at CenturyLink Arena.

It was the first loss this season for Idaho (20-15-4, 44 points) when leading after two periods. They had been 11-0 in that situation.

The primary reason Bakersfield's late flurry mattered was because goaltender Laurent Brossoit spent the first two periods keeping the Condors in it. He stoned two, short-handed breakaways in the first period, first getting Austin Fyten in close and a subsequent rebound attempt from Rob Linsmayer and then, later in the first, he robbed David deKastrozza on a short-handed attempt with a toe save to ensure a scoreless tie after one period.

In the second, Idaho finally broke through. Anthony Nigro fed the puck through neutral to Austin Fyten and Fyten, near the end of a shift, blasted a shot from the high slot over Brossoit's blocker at 7:58 of the period to make it a 1-0 game. Idaho goaltender Pat Nagle - returned to Idaho earlier in the day from Texas of the American Hockey League - was brilliant through two, turning aside all 19 shots he faced.

Bakersfield turned up the pressure in the third but Idaho held firm for fifteen minutes, including a pair of big Nagle saves in close to maintain the one-goal lead. The good fortune would run out at 17:18 of the third when George Hughes was able to guide a puck across the slot to Joel Broda for a one-timer from the edge of the slot to tie the game. Less than a minute later, Bakersfield took the lead when Matt Thurber was able to re-direct a Collin Bowman shot from the right wing just over Nagle's shoulder at 18:07 to give the Condors a 2-1 lead. Then, with the Idaho net empty in favor of an extra attacker, Jordan Knackstedt won a race to a loose puck on the right wing for an easy, break-away empty-net goal to make it 3-1. All three goals came in less than two minutes.

Brossoit got the win, turning aside 29 of 30 Idaho shots. Nagle was the tough-luck loser, stopping 27 of 29. Idaho's penalty-kill unit was a perfect 5-for-5 while the power-play unit was 0-2.
