Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers have had excellent success in the third period this season, and that success continued on Sunday afternoon. Cody Sylvester broke a 1-1 tie at the 6:20 mark of the final stanza, and Max MacKay netted an insurance goal with 1:15 remaining, as the Nailers avenged Saturday night's setback, taking down the Cincinnati Cyclones, 3-1 at WesBanco Arena.

The Nailers opened the scoring at the 6:02 mark of the first period. Barry Goers poked the puck away from the front of his net, ultimately leading to a transition rush by forwards Jacob Lagace and Sahir Gill. After dishing a pass to his left for Gill, Lagace took the return feed, and slid a wrist shot through Rob Madore's legs from the bottom of the left circle. 2:10 later, Cincinnati tied the game. Anthony Luciani set up Josh Shalla on the right side of the slot, where he snapped a shot into the right side of the cage. Former Nailer Paul Crowder also had an assist on Shalla's marker, which sent the contest into the first intermission deadlocked at one.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second period, but at the 6:20 mark of the third, Wheeling regained its lead. Cody Sylvester skated down the right side of the offensive zone, before lifting a backhander into the top-left corner of the goal. The tally was Sylvester's fifth in four games during the week and his team-leading 11th of the season. Jacob Lagace recorded the lone assist. With 1:15 to go, Max MacKay put the exclamation point on the 3-1 victory, as he banged in an empty net goal.

Peter Mannino made his Wheeling debut in goal, turning aside 22 saves on 23 shots for the win. Rob Madore suffered the loss for the Cyclones, despite stopping 37 of the 39 shots he faced.

The Nailers will continue their four-game homestand on Wednesday night at 7:00, when they battle the Fort Wayne Komets.
