K-Wings skate past Royals
January 26, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - In their last 10 road games (8-2-0-0), no one has been able to stop the Reading Royals, with the exception of the Kalamazoo Wings. Just as they did two nights previous the K-Wings defeated the Royals, this time by the final of 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Wings Stadium.
Kalamazoo came out on fire in the first outshooting Reading 13-4 in the opening period. The defense played fast and fluidly as there was life in the K-Wings' skates. Defenseman Brandon Martell (2nd) scored his second professional career goal midway in the period.
With a quick reaction, Chris Lawrence sent a pass from behind the net to the tape of Matt Caria (13th), who beat the clock with two-tenths of a second remaining in the period. Sam Ftorek received a secondary assist on the tally increasing his point streak to four games.
The Royals began the afternoon with a disastrous mark. Prior to Sunday, Reading was 0-9-0-0 when trailing, heading into the second period.
Trying to earn their first victory when trailing after the opening 20 minutes, Julien Cayer (3rd) scored with a wrist shot 1:21 into the middle frame.
Justin Taylor (8th) reclaimed a two-goal cushion for the K-Wings 14:03 into the period, when he finished off a three-on-two odd man rush. Taylor's initial shot caromed off the crossbar, but the puck took a Kalamazoo bounce back to the forward's stick for the rebound marker.
Yannick Tifu was awarded a penalty shot late in the period; however, the winger's attempt was turned away by Joel Martin. The penalty shot marked the third try against the K-Wings on the season, all three against Martin, and the first to be denied.
Scoring the lone goal of the third period, Kevin Walrod split the defense and registered his first goal of the season midway in the stanza. Reading attempted to pull even, but Kalamazoo's defense shutdown the Royals to procure the one goal victory.
Kalamazoo will begin a three-game road swing this Wednesday, January 29th with a 7:05 p.m. encounter at the First Arena against the Elmira Jackals.
The K-Wings will return to Wings Stadium on Wednesday, February 5th with a 7p.m. face-off versus the Elmira Jackals during a 5:01 Wednesday. February 5th will also be a Winning Wednesday presented by WNWN.
