Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB - The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg ICE treated the fans to a back and forth affair on Friday night, but it was the ICE getting the last laugh in a 4-3 overtime victory at Westoba Place.
Karter Prosofsky scored 2:54 into extra time to lift the ICE to their 25th victory of the season.
"There was a lot of good moments in the game tonight," said Head Coach Don MacGillivray. "I thought we played really well in the first period and the third. They are a good club, you give them an inch and they take a mile. We found a way to get a point tonight. This one could have gone either way. It was a pretty even game."
Bret Hyland scored for the third straight night giving Brandon an early lead, but the ICE responded with three straight goals, including one on the man advantage, however the league leading powerplay only managed one goal on six chances.
"There are lessons to be learned here tonight," added MacGillivray. "We took too many penalties. You can give the #1 PP in the league six opportunities. We did a good job on the kill, but that's just too many. However, we battled hard though and I liked our compete level."
Zakhar Polshakov and Nate Danielson scored just five minutes apart in the third period to force overtime, but the Wheat Kings failed to muster a shot in the extra frame. Daniel Hauser remains undefeated in regulation, making 30 saves while Ethan Kruger stopped 32 shots in the loss.
Friday night was a far cry from opening weekend, in which the ICE handed Brandon consecutive blowout losses.
"Our group has grown so much since opening weekend," said Marcus Kallionkieli. "We're working together, practicing well as a group and it shows in the game as a group. I like what we have going on here and i'm excited to see where we can take this into the new year."
These two teams will meet again on Saturday night, at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg. You can catch the game on Bounce 96.1 and the iHeartRadio App, starting with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
