Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - Spokane Chiefs goalie and 2022 NHL Draft prospect Mason Beaupit turned away 39 shots to anchor a strong defensive effort on Friday night as the Chiefs beat the Portland Winterhawks, 4-1. It marked a season-high for Beaupit, who earned his sixth win of the year between the pipes.
The Spokane offense came out on fire, scoring the game's first three goals beginning with a snipe from defenseman Graham Sward at 7:46.
Young forward Carter Streek - who was originally a Portland selection in the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft - pitched in his fourth goal since being acquired by the Chiefs at 11:12. Defenseman Saige Weinstein earned the assist on the play, firing a shot on net from the left side for his first career point.
The Chiefs extended the lead to three when veteran Luke Toporowski scored his team-leading 11th at 13:10, rifling a slapshot inside the top-right corner to beat Portland netminder Dante Giannuzzi.
The Winterhawks found the net with 5:41 left in the opening frame as Robbie Fromm-Delorme finished a great back-and-forth with Cross Hanas to squeeze the puck past Beaupit's left pad.
That's all the scoring either goalie would allow as a scoreless second and third ensued, despite the Winterhawks outshooting Spokane 27-4. Chase Bertholet, acquired by Spokane from Winnipeg last week, gave the home side some insurance with a late empty-netter.
In total, Beaupit finished 39-for-40 while Giannuzzi went 13-for-16. Spokane went 0-f0r-2 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
The two clubs will face each other again on Saturday night at Spokane Arena, with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
