Got the Jitters Out
Friday's first matchup in Spokane saw the Hawks hit the road for the first time in over a month, and it showed in an uncharacteristic first period. Portland coughed up three goals in quick succession, and Spokane's Mason Beaupit was able to slam the door on a hard-charging Winterhawks team for the final 40 minutes en route to a 39-save win.
"I thought the second and third our team played well. The first period, we kinda want that back," said defenseman Kurtis Smythe. "They scored three quick goals there and ran with that lead. I thought we did some good things tonight. They had all week to practice and get ready for us and we played a midweek game, fresh off the bus and first road trip in a while, but tomorrow we'll be ready for them and watch some video and I'm sure we'll come very prepared."
The Hawks did carry play in the final two periods as they looked more like the team that we saw at the VMC over the last few weeks, so there should be no shortage of confidence in the dressing room ahead of the rematch - especially now that their first game in a road barn since early November is behind them.
Home for the Holidays
It's the final game for the Hawks before the Christmas break, and you can bet they'd like a win to celebrate as they head home to spend time with family. It's also important that last night's hiccup not be allowed to snowball into something bigger - the team has worked hard to build positive momentum over the last month, and they can keep that going with another victory tonight. And after the break, they'll be right back at the VMC on Dec. 28 for a duel with Tri-City!
Keep an Eye on Robbie
Robbie Fromm-Delorme scored the lone goal of the game for Portland last night, and continued what a team-leading scoring pace against Spokane this year. In four games, Fromm-Delorme has three goals and three assists for six points - the most of any player 0n either team. He and Cross Hanas worked a give-and-go play to perfection last night, and Fromm-Delorme has displayed good chemistry with multiple players on Portland's roster - as they look for a rebound victory, look for #11 to be involved in a winning effort.
