Iadisernia's Walk-Off Single Leads Chiefs by Kernels 3-2
Published on July 3, 2023 under Midwest League (MWL)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Peoria, IL - With two on and one out in the bottom of the tenth inning, Alex Iadisernia lined a single into right-center field to score the game-winning run as Peoria walks off Cedar Rapids for the second straight night, 3-2.
After Cedar Rapids hopped out to the 2-0 lead a night ago, Peoria did so on Monday night. In the bottom of the second inning, Darlin Moquete knocked a home run over the wall in left field to give the Chiefs the early lead at 1-0.
That 1-0 tally remained until the bottom of the fifth inning. Moquete opened up the frame with a leadoff double, then after a groundout, scored on a Francisco Hernandez RBI single to double the Chiefs lead at 2-0.
Those two runs were the only two allowed by Christian MacLeod in his fifth start with the Kernels. The left-hander went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while grabbing seven strikeouts.
MacLeod's counterpart, Ian Bedell, was just as stellar for Peoria. Bedell tossed six scoreless innings allowing just a single hit with eight strikeouts.
After scoreless frames by each bullpen in both the eighth and ninth innings, the score stayed 2-0, going to the top of the ninth inning. Down to their final three outs, Tanner Schobel led off the inning with a double off the wall in left field and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Kala'i Rosario to cut the Peoria lead to 2-1. After a flyout, Misael Urbina walked to put two on with two out for Jose Salas, who singled into center field to tie the game at 2-2.
After Peoria went scoreless in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Cedar Rapids did the same in the top of the tenth, the Chiefs came to bat in a tied game in the bottom of the tenth inning. After a flyout kept the extra-inning runner on second base with one out, an intentional walk put two on. The batter next, Iadisernia, then deposited one in the center field to score the winning run for Peoria in the 3-2 walk-off victory.
The loss of the Kernels (45-30) is the second straight in walk-off fashion against Peoria (39-36), as the two split the series at three wins apiece. The Kernels continue their stretch of 12 games in 11 days tomorrow night at 6:35 as they welcome in Quad Cities for a six-game series beginning on July 4.
