Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- Right-hander Hunter Adkins retired the final 16 batters he faced on Wednesday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium, as the Lake Erie Crushers blanked the Gateway Grizzlies, in a 4-0 victory.

The victory for the Crushers (13-19) was their third in a row, marking their longest winning streak of the season, and gives them their first series victory at home this season, while the loss for the Grizzlies (12-23) dropped their record to 3-13 on the road.

Adkins (1-3) stole the show for the Crushers, as he tossed eight scoreless innings, marking the longest start by any Crusher this season, and he fanned nine batters without allowing a free pass. He allowed three hits over the first three innings, but sat down the final 16 batters he faced.

The Crushers were held hitless through the first four innings of the contest, as Gateway starting pitcher Trevor Richards (1-1) faced just one batter over the minimum during that stretch, before Joey Burney broke it up with a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth. Austin Prott's sacrifice bunt moved him to second, and two batters later, Emmanuel Quiles singled to center to score Burney. Quiles scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Lake Erie added a pair of big insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull away. Kevin Zak started the rally with a one out single to center, and Ty Nelson followed with a walk, which knocked Richards out of the game. Two batters later, Burney singled to left with the bases loaded to score Zak, and Prott followed with a sacrifice fly to score Nelson to plate the last run of the game.

Adkins scored his first victory of the season, while Trevor Longfellow preserved the shutout by tossing a scoreless ninth inning. Richards took the loss for the Grizzlies after allowing four runs on four hits over 7.1 innings of work. Lake Erie pitching has been strong in the series against the Grizzlies, allowing just a run on 12 hits over the last two games.

Burney led the way for the Crushers with a 2-for-4 performance, on a night where six Crushers reached safely at least once. Nelson reached twice on a double and a walk, and has now reached safely in six straight games.

The Crushers will finish their three-game series with the Gateway Grizzlies at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night. Right-hander Rob Blanc (0-2, 2.19) will start for the Crushers, while the Grizzlies will throw right-hander Max Schonfeld (2-1, 2.61). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
