Trevor Walch Dazzles Again as Otters Win a Pitcher's Duel 1-0

Evansville, IN- It was "Kid's Day" at Bosse Field, but it could easily have been "Pitcher's Day" as Trevor Walch and Justin D'Alesandro got into a pitcher's duel, with Walch and the Evansville Otters (22-13) getting the best of the Frontier Greys (15-18) in a 1-0 victory.
Walch allowed a hit on the first pitch of the game to Brandon Tierney who was sacrificed over to second before reaching third on a groundout by Zach Tanner. However, Walch buckled down and got Scott Carcaise swinging to end the inning and the threat. That would be the last Grey to reach third base against Walch.
The righty from Eufala, OK, picked up eight more strikeouts over the next seven innings of work, not allowing a batter to get past second base after the third inning. The most trouble he was in after the first was in the second frame when the first two batters reached on a single and walk, but back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout allowed him to elude the jam.
Justin D'Alessandro opposed him on the mound and fired six scoreless inning of his own while allowing just three hits, picking up six strikeouts along the way and walking two batters. The Otters were finally able to break through in the bottom of the eighth inning off of reliever Nick McBride in his second inning of relief.
Josh Allen was hit to begin the frame before John Schultz walked. Chris Sweeney grounded to short on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with one out. Nik Balog swung at the first pitch he saw from McBride, grounding it right at the first base bag where Carcaise stepped on the base and fired to second, but the throw was a little high and Sweeney was able to slide under the tag, allowing Allen to score from third and putting the Otters up 1-0.
That was all the offense the Otters would need, but Edgar Lopez made things a little scary in the top of the ninth. Lopez took over for Walch on the mound and allowed a leadoff single. He induced a popout to the next batter, but a walk and a single to shallow right loaded the bases with one out. Lopez got in front of Jose Sermo 1-2 before dropping a gorgeous backdoor breaking ball for out number two and then struck out Francisco Rosario on three pitches, the last a fastball right over the inside corner to close the game and finish off the Greys.
Trevor Walch improves to 4-2 with the win and after firing eight shutout innings, sees his ERA drop to 1.28. Nick McBride picks up his first loss in relief and is now 0-1 on the season while Edgar Lopez stays perfect as the Otters' closer, collecting eight saves in his first eight chances.
The Otters and Greys will have the finale of their series tomorrow night at 6:35 on Hoosiers Lottery Night with fireworks after the game. The pregame show with Mike Radomski, Bill McKeon, and Jake Donnelly will start at 6:15 pm CDT.
