
Rascals Rock Aviators in Series Opener

O'Fallon, MO - The Rascals (20-13) won their series opener 10-5 over the Rockford Aviators (22-11) on Tuesday, June 23 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. The Rascals are now only 2.0 games behind the Aviators for first place in the Frontier League West Division.
RHP Dane Stone (W, 3-1) dominated early on and retired the first nine batters he faced. He surrendered three runs and six hits over a career-high 7.1 innings of work. He struck out five and did not issue a walk. He has now won his last three starts.
Rockford starter Kyle Brueggemann (L, 4-2), who entered play with 1.85 ERA, allowed a season-worst nine runs, seven earned, and 11 hits. His ERA inflated to 3.05.
The Rascals jumped out ahead with four runs in the first inning. CF Curran Redal and LF Brian Hansen each singled to put men at the corners with no outs. C Josh Ludy hit an RBI groundout to plate Redal. DH Danny Canela followed with a two-run homer, and 3B Taylor Ard went back-to-back with Canela and jacked a solo shot. Canela and Ard are tied for the team lead with seven homeruns.
An error allowed RF Jackson Slaid to reach base with no outs in the second inning. Redal then singled, and Hansen hit an RBI double. Next, Ludy hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly to left field.
Michael Hur led off the top of the fourth inning with a single, the Aviators first baserunner of the game. Two batters later, Dusty Robinson hit a homerun to left field.
SS Johnny Morales and Redal each singled in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hansen then hit his second homerun of the season, a three-run homer.
Each team scored a run in the eighth inning. Greg Velazquez doubled, and Hur hit an RBI single in the top of the inning. Redal and Hansen each singled to open the bottom of the frame and put men on the corners. Ludy then bounced into a doubleplay, which scored Redal.
Rockford added two more runs in the ninth. Devon Rodriguez reached on an error, and Tyler Smith singled to right field. Anthony Renteria drove in Rodriguez on a single, and Smith scored on a Velazquez groundout.
Hansen went 5-for-5 with two runs, a double, a homerun, and four RBI. He is the first Rascal to collect five hits in a game in 2015. Redal hit safely four times and scored four runs. Seven of the nine Rascals batters reached on a hit.
RHP Derek Cape pitched 0.2 inning and struck out the only two batters he faced. RHP Zac Treece ceded two unearned runs on two hits in his 1.0 frame.
The Rascals continue their series with the Rockford Aviators on Wednesday, June 24 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark at 11:05 a.m. CDT. LHP Lucas Laster (0-0, 2.08) will start for the Rascals.
