
Slammers Continue Strong Play; Top Boomers 5-3

Schaumburg, IL- The top of the order leads the way for the Joliet Slammers (14-21) as they beat the Schaumberg Boomers (15-20) 5-4 on Wednesday night.
The Boomers scored first against pitcher Andrew Strenge. With two outs in the first, 3B Joel Hutter, DH Mike Schulze and 1B Steve McQ uail all singled, with Hutter scoring the game's first run.
Joliet evened the game in the second inning against pitcher Brett Mabry. DH Russell Moldenhauer walked and RF Casey Fletcher was hit by a pitch. With one out catcher Jack Cleary cracked an RBI single to drive in Moldenhauer, tying the game at 1-1.
The Boomers responded with a run in the bottom of the second frame. LF Justin Vasquez led off with a double and later scored on a throwing error by the catcher Jack Cleary.
The Slammers came back with two runs in the third. LF JD Williams walked and CF Charlie White singled to put runners at first and second. Both of them stole a bag and with two in scoring position, 3B Mike Garza singled to center. That brought home a pair, putting Joliet up 3-2.
The Boomers tied the game up in the fourth inning. SS Cam Sherrer doubled with two outs and scored on a Jordan Dean two-bagger, tying the game up at 3-3
Joliet grabbed the lead in the fifth. With runners at the corners, Garza grounded into a double play allowing White to score. The Slammers added another run in the sixth inning. With runners at the corners, Casper laid down a bunt that was bobbled by Mabry. Rodriguez came in to score on the squeeze play, putting Joliet up 5-3.
That was all the Slammers pitching staff would need as Strenge combined with Sam Moore and Navery to shut down the Boomers over the final five innings. Strenge tossed seven frames, giving up three earned runs on nine hits, four strikeouts and one walk. Sam Moore allowed no runs on one walk and one strikeout. Navery Moore nailed down the save, his sixth of the year, pitching 1 1/3 innings without allowing a baserunner, striking out two.
