Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - For his second straight start, Jared Hughes provided a seven-inning outing, and the Altoona Curve bats continued to roll as they achieve their first three-game winning streak of the season in a 6-2 win on Friday night against the Erie SeaWolves at Blair County Ballpark.
The Curve got on the board first for the second straight game as Brock Holt led off game with a single, followed by another single by Starling Marte. Then, with runners on second and third after a bunt, Jordy Mercer hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 1-0.
The SeaWolves struck back in their next at-bats as Michael Bertram doubled with one down and was brought home by Deik Scram, who also doubled, to tie the game up at one.
After two straight scoreless innings, the Curve broke the game open in the fifth inning as Marte reached with one down on a walk followed by a single by Eric Fryer. After a fly out, with two down, Jeremy Farrell ended a 0-for-14 skid with an RBI double to put the Curve back in front and, the next batter, Tony Sanchez brought in two more runs to stretch the advantage to three at 4-1.
For the Curve, Hughes went seven innings, duplicating his effort against Richmond on May 8th, as he allowed only one run and six hits with three strikeouts and a walk. He owns two of the team's three seven-inning starts this season and earned his second straight win.
The Curve were not done scoring, as in the seventh, Marte reached for the fourth straight time with a leadoff single, stole second, and was brought home on a single by Fryer to make it 5-1. The Curve finished off their scoring for the night as it was Farrell again with a double, his second in as many at-bats, bringing home Fryer to take a five-run lead.
In relief of Hughes, Tim Alderson continued his superb start to the season with a clean eighth inning and Noah Krol finished off the SeaWolves in the ninth allowing one run in the process.
With the win, the Curve are back to one game above .500 for the second time this season and they advance their home record to 9-4 on the year. The Curve have scored 26 runs in their last three games.
The four-game series will continue on Saturday as RHP Mike Colla (1-1, 3.52) will make his fourth start of the season and he will be opposed by the Detroit Tigers top prospect, and the ninth overall pick in the 2009 draft, RHP Jacob Turner (1-1, 2.58). The game will feature a postgame fireworks display that will illuminate the skies at Blair County Ballpark after the game on Saturday.
Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. with gates to Blair County Ballpark opening at 4:30 p.m. Great seats for the ballgame are still available by calling the Curve at 877.99.Curve or by visiting the official website of the Curve www.AltoonaCurve.com. Pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network will begin at 5 p.m.
