Fisher Cats Split Doubleheader To Keep First Place Edge

(Reading, PA)-Ricardo Nanita drove in three runs with a single and a double and Rey Gonzalez picked up his team-leading fourth win as the Fisher Cats opened a doubleheader on Friday night in Reading with a 7-1 win over the Phillies.

Reading earned a split of the twinbill with an 8-3 win over the Fisher Cats in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Fisher Cats sent eight men to the plate in the top of the first inning, scoring four times. Moises Sierra (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Travis d'Arnaud had RBI singles and Ricardo Nanita (2-for-3, 3 RBI) doubled in two more for a 4-0 lead.

New Hampshire (21-13) added two more in the top of the third inning. Mike McDade doubled, Sierra was hit by a pitch and d'Arnaud singled to load the bases. Nanita picked up his third RBI of the game with a single and Mark Sobolewski added a sacrifice fly for a 6-0 lead.

McDade and Sierra also connected on consecutive doubles to produce a run in the top of the fifth inning to build a 7-0 lead.

Reading plated its first run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Freddy Galvis off Fisher Cats winning pitcher Rey Gonzalez (4-1). Gonzalez allowed one run on four hits, he walked one and struck out three. Mike Hinckley pitched a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout.

Chris Kissock (1-4) took the loss for the Phillies.

In the nightcap, Carlos Rivera homered twice as Reading (21-14) earned the split. Rivero hit both home runs off losing pitcher Yohan Pino (0-3). He homered in the third inning to give the Phillies a 1-0. He also homered to lead-off the fifth, when the Phillies plated four runs. Freddy Galvis doubled in two runs and Matt Miller (2-for-4, 2 RBI) had an RBI single.

New Hampshire scored its first two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Darin Mastroianni singled and Adeiny Hechavarria homered.

After the Phillies took an 8-2 lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning which included another Miller RBI single, the Fisher Cats came to bat in the seventh inning. New Hampshire used three consecutive two-out singles by Craig Stansberry, Callix Crabbe and Darin Mastroianni (3-for-4, R, RBI) for the 8-3 final.

The Fisher Cats continue the series in Reading on Saturday night beginning at 6:05pm. RHP Chad Beck (3-0, 1.91) will start for the Fisher Cats against Reading RHP Josh Zeid (1-2, 4.38) Radio coverage begins at 5:45pm with Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
