Howling End To Monarchs' Winning Streak

HARTFORD, CT - Left wing Jordan Owens scored with 31-seconds remaining in the game to end the Manchester Monarchs winning streak at six games with a 2-1 loss to the Hartford Wolf Pack in front of 5,819 fans at the XL Center on Saturday night.

"It was a tough one to swallow," said Head Coach Mark Morris. "We controlled a big part of the game and untimely penalties caused some of our key players to be out there killing when we could have used their energy in a more positive manner."

Manchester (9-7-0-3) is tied for fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 21 points. Hartford (9-9-0-2) is tied for sixth place in the Atlantic Division with 20 points.

With 31-seconds remaining in the game, Owens skated down the right wing looking for the pass but opted to shoot and tallied his second goal of the season and the game-winner. Left wing Devin DiDiomete fed the puck to Owens who carried it over to Monarchs' blueline and to the right face-off circle. Owens snapped a wrist shot that beat Monarchs netminder Jonathan Bernier five-hole for the come from behind victory.

Skating with the man advantage, right wing Teddy Purcell found the back of the net at 11:57 of the middle period for his ninth goal of the season. Hartford's defenseman David Urquhart stepped on the ice five-seconds before Purcell's goal to end Manchester's brief two-man advantage. Center Marty Murray collected a pass from center Justin Azevedo along the right wing wall. Murray slid the puck to Purcell at the center point for a powerful one-timer that took a straight-path to the net and snuck inside the right post for the 1-0 lead.

Hartford evened the game at 1-1 with a power play goal at 13:28 of the third period. At the right point, defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti shared the puck with his partner at the left point, defenseman Brian Fahey. Winding up for the one-timer, Fahey blasted his shot toward the net. Center Greg Moore redirected the puck past Bernier for his sixth goal of the season.

"It was another set back we brought on ourselves," said Morris. "Unfortunately our win streak has come to an end and it's back to the drawing board."

Bernier (5-2-2) took the loss with 28 saves on 30 shots. Goaltender Matt Zaba (3-2-0) earned his third win of the season with 26 saves.

Manchester went 1-for-4 on the power play. Hartford was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

The Monarchs play their fifth game in six days on Sunday, November 30 when they travel to the Cumberland County Civic Center for a 4:00 p.m. contest with the Portland Pirates.
