Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - The Pirates suffered their fifth straight loss by a score of 5-1 to the Lowell Devils. Lowell came out with all the jump in the first period and grabbed a 3-0 lead, leaving Portland trying to fight back throughout the game.

The Devils' Nicklas Bergfors scored the first two goals of the game, with the assists on each going to Chad Wiseman and Michael Swift. The Pirates were able to generate a few chances late in the period, but the Devils scored a backbreaker with just one second left in the first period when Ryan Murphy took a shot off a two on one and beat Portland goaltender Adam Dennis.

In the second period, the Pirates would make a change in goal as Jhonas Enroth took over. Portland started to claw it's way back when Colin Murphy jammed home a rebound off a Derek Whitmore shot. Colton Fretter picked up the second assist. The momentum was short lived though as Chad Wiseman scored a mere 25 seconds later. Wiseman found a loose puck off a rebound in the top of the slot and beat Enroth. Bergfors and Matthew Spiller picked up the assists. The two teams would head into the second intermission with Lowell on top 4-1.

In the third period, the ice stayed tilted in favor of Lowell as Alexander Vasyunov scored his sixth goal of the year less than three minutes into the session with the assists going to Brad Mills and Matthew Corrente. Portland couldn't find a way to beat Devils goaltender Jeff Frazee through the rest of the period, and Lowell won by a final score of 5-1.

Adam Dennis stopped 6 of the 9 shots he faced and was dealt the loss, dropping to 6-4-0-0 on the year. Jeff Frazee made 40 saves to pick up the win and improve to 4-1-1-1.
