
Admirals Erase Two-Goal Deficit and Top Penguins in OT

NORFOLK, VA - Hours after arriving back in Norfolk from NHL recall, defenseman Matt Smaby scored 2:13 into overtime to cap off a third period comeback as the Norfolk Admirals (7-12-1-3) topped the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (11-9-2-1) 4-3 on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.
The Admirals struck first 4:33 into the game. Brandon Bochenski sent a shot from the left corner toward the net. Zenon Konopka was parked in front of the net and redirected the shot through the legs of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton netminder Adam Berkhoel for his seventh goal of the season.
The Penguins knotted the game up at 1-1 just over three minutes later as a Norfolk penalty expired. Mark Letestu sent a shot from the left faceoff circle that eluded Admirals goaltender Karri Ramo blocker-side at 7:52.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took a 2-1 lead 8:33 into the second period. Luca Caputi sent a shot from the right faceoff circle that beat Ramo blocker-side.
Joey Mormina doubled the Penguins lead at with under five minutes to go in the second stanza. His slap shot from the high slot found its way through Ramo's legs at 15:14. Mike McKenna replaced Ramo in net to start the third period.
The Admirals power play struck early in the third period to draw the home team within one goal of tying the game. Jamie Heward spotted Bochenski in the right circle, and Bochenski sent a wrist shot past a screened Berkhoel at 1:29 for his ninth goal of the season.
Paul Szczechura's team-leading eleventh goal of 2008-09 knotted the score up at three goals apiece with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. Szczechura received a pass from Jason Ward and stuffed his own rebound past Berkhoel at 14:54.
In the extra session, Matt Smaby entered the attacking zone and sent a blistering slap shot from the right point that beat Berkhoel at 2:13.
Karri Ramo (24 shots, 21 saves) did not receive a decision after playing the first two periods. Mike McKenna (4 shots, 4 saves) came into the game in relief and picked up the win. Adam Berkhoel (48 shots, 44 saves) got the loss.
Norfolk was 1-2 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 0-4.
The Admirals now head back out on the road with five games away from Scope beginning tomorrow evening in Hershey. The puck drops at 5:00 p.m. against the Bears at Giant Center.
The Admirals will return to Scope in two weeks with contests against the Penguins on December 10 and against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on December 12 and 13.
