Howell, Lakovic Heading to World Under-17 Hockey Challenge
October 18, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors will be well represented at the 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge next month in Langley and Delta, B.C.
Defenceman Marek Howell and forward Lynden Lakovic are among the 66 players that will suit up for Team Canada at the tournament, Hockey Canada announced on Tuesday.
"This is a great accomplishment for Lynden and Marek and shows how far they have come with their development," Warriors general manager Jason Ripplinger said.
"This will give them more experience and will help them grow as players and as people. We wish them all the best."
Lakovic will suit up for Team Black, which will also be coached by Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary, while Howell will play for Team White at the tournament.
Howell was selected by the Warriors in the first round, 16th overall, in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft last December. He made his Western Hockey League debut during the 2021-22 season, suiting up in five games and registering one goal and two points.
So far this season, Howell has one goal and two points through nine games as a rookie.
Lakovic was a second round pick, 27th overall, in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft. He also made his WHL debut last season, playing in the final game of the regular season.
In eight games this season, he has two goals.
This tournament will be the first international experience for both players.
The 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge opens on Thursday, Nov. 3 and the gold medal game goes on Saturday, Nov. 12. Howell and Canada White face-off with Sweden to open the tournament, while Lakovic, O'Leary and Canada Black have a showdown with Canada Red to kick-off the week.
