Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Houston Astros C Max Stassi is joining the Round Rock Express on a major league rehab assignment, the club announced on Thursday afternoon. The backstop is expected to start for the E-Train in Thursday night's contest against the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate) at 7:05 p.m. at Dell Diamond.
Stassi has been sidelined since May 26 with left knee soreness. The 28-year-old opened the 2019 season with the Astros for the first time in his career, hitting to a .167 average (9-54) with a home run and three RBI in 18 games prior to the injury.
He was named the Houston Astros Rookie of the Year by the BBWAA in 2018 after hitting .226 (50-221) with 13 doubles, eight home runs and 27 RBI across 88 games during his first full professional season. He committed just two errors in 82 games behind the plate for a .997 fielding percentage, the fifth-best single-season mark by a catcher in club history.
The backstop has appeared in 150 major league games across parts of six seasons, all with the Astros. Stassi owns a career .223 batting average (79-354) with 16 doubles, 12 home runs and 41 RBI. The Woodland, California native was originally acquired by Houston along with INF Chris Carter and RHP Brad Peacock in a February 4, 2013 trade with the Oakland Athletics that also sent INF Jed Lowrie and RHP Fernando Rodriguez to the Bay Area.
Stassi tore up the minor leagues en route to Houston, earning All-Star nods with the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies in 2014 and 2017, the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks in 2013 and the Class A Kane County Cougars in 2010. He was also named an MiLB.com Organizational All-Star in 2013 with Houston and 2012 with Oakland.
He was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the fourth round of the 2009 MLB Draft.
Fans can catch Stassi in action as the Express continue their three-game series against the Aces on Thursday night. Round Rock RHP Rogelio Armenteros (3-4, 5.00) is scheduled to start against Reno RHP Matt Koch (1-2, 7.46). First pitch at Dell Diamond is set for 7:05 p.m. The game can be streamed online via MiLB.tv with a valid subscription while audio from tonight's contest is available from AM 1300 The Zone.
