Hot Start to Second Half Continues for Whitecaps

COMSTOCK PARK - Casey Fien pitched five innings of relief to earn the win as Scott Sizemore belted a go ahead two homer for the Whitecaps in a 4-2 win over Lansing. The game featured a bench clearing brawl in the sixth innings that resulted in two ejections.

West Michigan is 7-1 in the second half and won three of four against Lansing in the series.

The ‘Caps grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the second inning when Jeramy Laster led off with a double then scored two batters later on an RBI single by Louis Ott.

Lansing claimed the lead, 2-1 in the fourth on a two run homer by Matt Lane off reliever Casey Fien. Whitecaps starting pitcher Ramon Garcia left after two innings due to an injury on his pitching hand. Fien went on to throw five innings of relief and earn the victory.

In the bottom of the fourth, West Michigan tied the game. Scott Sizemore led off with a triple then crossed the plate on a ground out by team RBI leader Brennan Boesch.

Sizemore blasted a two run homer to left in the fifth inning to break the 2-2 tie and send the Whitecaps on the way to the win.

However, when Lane batted a second time against Fien in the top of the sixth, there with two out and no one on base. Lane was hit by a pitch. In the bottom of the sixth with two out and no one on base Lansing pitcher Edward Rodriguez retaliated by hitting Ott with a pitch. Ott charged the mound and precipitated a benches clearing brawl. Only Ott and Rodriguez were ejected.

Brett Jensen pitched the ninth for West Michigan to earn his 15th save of the season.
