Burlington Bees News Release
Geneva, IL (June 28, 2007) - The Burlington Bees (6-2, 36-41) won their second straight series of the second half with a 4-3 win over the Kane County Cougars (2-6, 25-52) at Elfstrom Stadium tonight. After losing the first game of the set on Monday night, the Bees have won three in row to move on top of the Western Division standings. The Bees have won 9 of 12 from the Cougars this year.
The Bees continued their streak of scoring first in each game of this series and six of eight games in the second half with a run in the top of the first inning. Joe Dickerson grounded a one-out double up the third base lined and scored on a two-out single by Brady Everett. The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the second. Ramiro Mendez led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on another groundout by Todd Johnson.
The Bees went back on top in the third when Michael Thompson belted his Midwest League-leading 15th home run of the season to left. The Bees extended the lead in the fifth inning. Jamar Walton led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Dickerson for a 3-1 Bees' advantage. Dickerson is now 6-6 with a walk and has been hit by a pitch in his last eight plate appearances with runners in scoring position and two outs. The Bees added their final run against Cougars' starter James Heuser in the sixth. With one out, Everett, Jeff Howell, and Felix Peralta connected on consecutive singles to produce a run. Howell and Peralta have both hit safely in six straight games. Heuser (6-3) worked through seven innings and struck out six, but took his first loss since May 22nd and his first home loss of the season. John Herrera finished the final two innings and allowed one hit for the Cougars.
Bees' starter Harold Mozingo (7-6) worked through 5.2 innings and allowed just three hits and two runs. The second came in after he left the game. With one out in the sixth, Jermaine Mitchell doubled to end a streak of nine in a row retired by Mozingo. Mitchell moved to third on a groundout before Henry Barrera came on in relief. Barrera gave up a single to Greg Dowling that brought in Mitchell, but didn't allow another base runner and struck out two over 2.1 innings in relief.
Chris Hayes came in for the save in the bottom of the ninth inning and retired the leadoff man before hitting Dowling with a pitch. Pinch-runner Sammy Hernandez moved to second as Mendez bounced out to the mound, but Haas Pratt kept the Cougars alive with a single to left that drove in Hernandez and go the Cougars to within one at 4-3. Hayes ended the game by striking out Todd Johnson and earned his team-leading fifth save.
The Bees continue this road swing with the first of four at Peoria tomorrow night. RH Josh Cribb (1-6, 6.15) will be on the mound for the Bees against RH Jose Pina (1-7, 5.64) of the Chiefs. Game time is 7:00 and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
