Swing End Road Trip with Loss
June 28, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities opened the second half with seven consecutive road games, a trip that came to an end with a 5-2 loss to the Clinton LumberKings on Thursday night at Alliant Energy Field.
Quad Cities (3-4, 41-35) will return to John O'Donnell Stadium on Friday night, welcoming the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest to town on the heels of a 3-4 road trip. Clinton (5-2, 46-28) broke a 1-1 tie on Thursday with two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings, which was plenty for starter Zach Phillips.
The LumberKings won the race to the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, as K.C. Herren drew a one-out walk and Manny Pina doubled him home for a 1-0 lead. The Swing emerged from the inning with the momentum, however, as left fielder Jaime Landin later gunned down Pina trying to score from second on a single for the third out of the frame.
In the top of the third, Quad Cities evened the score. The bases were empty with two away when Christian Lopez drove a double down the right field line. Moments later, Jared Schweitzer took a pitch that was low and away and flipped it into shallow right for a base hit, scoring Lopez to tie the score, 1-1.
The LumberKings went back on the attack on the bottom of the fourth. With men at the corners and one out Chris Kemp took an outside pitch and shot it down the third base line, driving one run home and advancing Pina to third on a double. Two batters later David Paisano hit a hot smash to third, and after knocking the ball down Donovan Solano's throw to first was errant, allowing Pina to cross the plate and push Clinton's lead to 3-1.
They added two more in the fifth, as Jose Vallejo opened the frame with a triple and scored on a double by John Whittleman. After Whittleman tagged and moved to third on a fly out, Herren singled over a drawn-in infield to stretch the LumberKings' advantage to 5-1.
The Swing tacked on their final run in the top of the ninth, as Tim Dorn registered his first Midwest League RBI with a two-out single that plated Luke Gorsett from third.
Phillips (8-2) dominated the Swing to pick up the win, fanning eight without issuing a walk over six innings of work. The southpaw allowed one run on five hits and finished strong by retiring the last eight batters he faced, five of which came on strikeouts.
Blake King turned in one of his best outings of the year out of the bullpen, striking out five without allowing a hit over three innings. He retired nine of the 10 batters he faced - including the last eight - with a one-out walk in the sixth the lone exception.
Brandon Dickson (7-4) took the loss despite notching a career-high six strikeouts. The All-Star right-hander lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing three runs - two earned - on five hits and two walks.
