Alex Burnett held the Kernels to four hits and struck out six as the Beloit Snappers shut out the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 3-0, in front of 2,395 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night.
Burnett (4-5) walked two and struck out six over seven innings to get the win. Rob Delaney pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn his 24th save of the season.
Abel Nieves, Mark Trumbo, Tyler Johnson and Tadd Brewer were the only Kernels with hits and Brewer's was for a double.
Kernels starter Jeremy Haynes (2-4) was a victim of no run support as he held the Snappers to four hits and two runs (one earned) and struck out eight over 7-1/3 innings.
The loss drops the Kernels to 3-4 in the second half and 41-35 overall.
The final game between the Kernels and Snappers is Thursday night at 7 pm as RHP David Herndon is set to take the hill for the Kernels. It will also be a 100.7 The Fox Buck-A-Cup Thursday as fans can enjoy cups of beer or soda for just $1 at the Kernels Beverage Center. Slushies are one dollar and bottled soda and water are just two dollars. Gates open at 6 pm.
