Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, IN - The Dayton Dragons and South Bend Silver Hawks put in a little extra work on Thursday night to wrap up the first half of an eight game eight day road tip for the Miami Valley's Team. Wednesday night's third game of the series was suspended in the bottom half of the second inning when heavy rains hit the South Bend area. The Dragons snapped an eight game losing streak with a 6-1 win in game one, and started a modest two game winning streak by taking game two by the score of 2-1.
On Wednesday night, the Dragons jumped on Silver Hawks starter Derik Nippert (LP, 3-1) for a two spot in the top half of the second inning on a two out, two run home run to left center by catcher Eddy Rodriguez. The fifth homer of the season for Rodriguez flew completely out of Coveleski Stadium and scored Denis Phipps who picked up a two out double into the left field corner. South Bend wasted little time coming back against the Dragons as Daniel Perales led off the home half of the second inning with a homer to right off Dragons starter Daniel Guerrero (ND). Guerrero walked the next hitter Steve Mena on four pitches and was ahead of Richard Mercado nothing and two when the heavy rains and lightning suspended the game.
When play continued on Thursday night, the Dragons sent LHP Lee Tabor (WP, 3-1) to the hill, while South Bend countered with RHP Eric Butler (ND)
Dayton extended the lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on an SAC fly from Chris Valaika and a wild pitch from Butler. Valaika added his second RBI on the night with a single in the seventh for a 5-1 lead. Billy Rojo extended his hit streak to five games with an RBI single in the eighth for a 6-1 advantage. Tabor however was the true story for the Dragons in picking up the win. The left hander set a season high with six strikeouts in his 5.2 innings of work.
Dayton got ahead 1-0 in the second game by pushing a run across in the top of the third inning against Eddie Romero (ND). Phipps and Jason Louwsma singled to begin the inning, and advanced 90 feet on a perfect sacrifice bunt from Tony Esquer. After an intentional walk to Drew Stubbs, Justin Turner picked up the sacrifice fly for the 1-0 lead.
Travis Webb (ND) went 6.0 innings for the Dragons, allowing just two hits and two walks, while striking out four in shutting out South Bend. The Dragons were just two outs away from the victory in the shortened seven inning contest when Daniel Perales homered off of Misael DeJesus (WP, 4-2) to knot the game at 1-1.
South Bend brought in their closer Reid Mahon (LP, 4-2) to pitch the top of the eighth inning. The first pitch Mahon delivered was crushed by Phipps over the left field fence for a home run, and Dayton led 2-1. DeJesus got the final three outs to preserve the victory.
The Dragons continue the eight game road trip with a four game series in Fort Wayne against the Wizards beginning on Friday night with a 7:00 PM first pitch. RHP Anthony Gressick (2-5, 6.92 ERA) will get the start for the Dragons, while Fort Wayne will counter with LHP Nathan Culp (7-3, 3.34 ERA) to the bump. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM. All Dragons games in 2007 are also streamed live on the internet at www.daytondragons.com via All In Broadcasting.
