Chiefs Split Series with Wisconsin after 8-3 Loss

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs dropped an 8-3 decision to the visiting Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the final game of four game series at O'Brien Field on Thursday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 35-42 on the season and 4-4 in the second half.

The Chiefs jumped out to a first inning lead after Ryne Malone walked on four pitches against Timber Rattlers starter Steve Richard. Josh Lansford followed with a single to right that the right fielder misplayed and allowed Malone to score from first to make it 1-0.

Peoria loaded the bases in the second inning after Ryan Norwood singled and Blake Lalli walked. Brian Leclerc picked up his first hit in a Chiefs uniform with a bunt single. Matt Camp hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Norwood to make it 2-0.

Wisconsin tied the game in the fifth against Chiefs reliever Donny Walters. Calvin Beamon reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a passed ball. Juan Diaz singled to right field which allowed Beamon to score from second and make it 2-1. The Chiefs defense committed two errors after two were out, one by Walters and another by Malone that allowed Wisconsin to tie the game 2-2. Walters continued to struggle in the inning. With the bases loaded he walked Alex Liddi on five pitches to put Wisconsin ahead 3-2. Miguel Cuevas came on in relief and retired James McOwen on one pitch to end the inning.

The Rattlers continued adding to their lead in the sixth inning against Cuevas. Beamon walked after two men were out and Diaz followed with a single. Reed Eastley drove a triple off the wall in right center to score both runners and make it 5-2. Cuevas could not get out of the inning after walking the bases loaded and walking in a run to make it 6-2. Jeremy Papelbon gave up a two run single to Joe White to extend the lead to 8-2.

The Chiefs started to climb back into the game in the bottom of the eighth inning against Keith Renaud. Matt Camp singled to start the inning. Jonathon Mota doubled to right field to give the Chiefs runners at the corners with no outs. Malone lined a shot down into the right field corner to score Camp to make it 8-3 but Mota was thrown out trying to score from first.

Walters suffered the loss in 2/3 of an inning while allowing three unearned runs and walking three. Cuevas finished with three innings pitched and allowed three hits and five runs. He also walked four batters. Papelbon worked 1 1/3 innings and allowed one hit while striking out one. Richard pitched seven strong innings to pick up the win. He allowed two runs, one of which were earned while striking out six and walking two.

Gorman's Pub Player of the Game Juan Mateo (SP) - Juan pitched four innings, the most innings pitched in his four starts with the Chiefs. He did not allow a run while striking out three and also walked three.

Notes... Canzler's hitting streak was stopped at eight games...Blake Lalli extended his hitting streak to seven games...Mateo has not allowed an earned run in seven innings over his last two starts ...
