Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - Facing a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Hot Rods used speed and guile to rally for a 3-1 win over the visiting Dayton Dragons (5-1) at Bowling Green Ballpark on Tuesday afternoon. The victory is the Hot Rods (2-4) second of the season, helping them avoid a sweep at the hands of the Dragons.

The eighth-inning rally began against relief pitcher Justin Walker (0-1) with the top of the order and a bunt single by Chris Murrill, extending his hitting streak to five games. Tyler Bortnick then hit a ground ball single to left field, which allowed Murrill to take third base and put runners at the corners. The next batter, Brett Nommensen, followed by poking a slow roller into left field, driving home Murrill to tie the game at 1-1.

Walker retired the next two batters, despite a double-steal that left Bortnick at third base and Nommensen at third. That brought up Mayo Acosta, who swung at the first pitch, bouncing a hard single into center field to bring home two runs and give the Hot Rods a lead they would never relinquish. In both Hot Rods victories, Acosta has produced two RBI, including the game-winning base hit.

Alex Koronis (1-0) took the win for the Hot Rods, despite allowing Dayton to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning. The Miami native worked two frames, allowing one run on a pair of hits and three strikeouts. He turned the ball over to Scott Shuman in the ninth, who fired a perfect frame for his second save of the season.

Not to be overlooked by the game-winning rally was the starting pitching performance of Player of the Game Alexander Colome (ND). The right-hander surrendered six runs in his first start for the Hot Rods last week, but he rebounded in a big way in his home debut. He went six strong innings, allowing just one base-runner, coming on a fourth inning double from Andrew Means. He retired the first 11 batters of the game and eventually set down 18 of 19 that he faced. He finished with six strikeouts without issuing a free pass.

The Hot Rods now say good bye to the Dragons until they head to Ohio at the end of April. They'll instead continue their home stand with the opener of a three-game series against West Michigan (Detroit Tigers) beginning Wednesday night. The Whitecaps feature former WKU star Wade Gaynor, a third round draft pick by the Tigers one year ago. RHP Jason McEachern (0-1, 5.79) makes his home debut against West Michigan LHP Jade Todd (0-1, 8.10).

Wednesday night is Warren County Wednesday, featuring $2 box seats for all Warren County residents. First pitch is at 6:35 PM. Gates open at 5 PM for season ticket holders and 5:30 PM for the general public. For tickets, visit www.bghotrods.com or call 270.901.2121.

You can follow the game with Tom Gauthier and Hank Fuerst beginning at 10:50 AM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
