Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Loons entered the ninth inning of Tuesday night's game tied 1-1, but a solo-homer by Lansing pinch hitter Brad Glenn won the game for the Lugnuts, who get the three-game sweep at Dow Diamond.
"Yeah, it's tough," Loons Manager Juan Bustabad said of the sweep. "We lost two games by one run, and we should have won all three games if you look at it, but we just didn't execute again tonight, and it cost us the game."
Great Lakes batters were held to three hits in the final game against Lansing. Lugnuts starter Ryan Shopshire pitched six innings and allowed only one run, fanning four and walking three. Dustin Antolin pitched three hitless innings of relief to register his first win of the season for the Lugnuts.
The road team scored first, courtesy of Oliver Dominguez's home run in the second at-bat of the game, connecting on a fastball from Loons starter Josh Wall.
"I walked the first guy and got behind on [Dominguez]," Wall explained of the opening at-bats. "I got to the point where I just wanted to throw a strike instead of giving him a good pitch and he just made a swing on it."
Wall quickly regrouped and went on to pitch a scoreless 4.2 innings, fanning four and walking one. Despite the sweep, the 23-year-old right-hander is certain his team can bounce back in future games.
"It's definitely a tough loss coming off of a sweep [against South Bend]," Wall said. "But we're still good, I'm still confident in our team, and I think we're going to come back strong next series."
The Loons tied the game in the fifth inning, when a throwing error by third baseman Kevin Nolan allowed Great Lakes right fielder Jerry Sands to score from third. Sands, Angelo Songco and Rafael Ynoa combined for the Loons three hits Tuesday.
Out of the Loons bullpen, Luis Vasquez and J.B. Paxson combined for 3.1 hitless innings. Southpaw Andy Suiter was called to the mound in the middle of the ninth and surrendered the game-winning home run on a 1-0 count.
Starting Wednesday, the Loons will host another three-game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks. The Loons swept the S-Hawks on the road to open the 2010 season and will have a pitching rematch, as Great Lakes RHP Brett Wallach will go against South Bend starter Charles Brewer for the second time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
